Leroy Bonner, the frontman of the Ohio Players, a funk band whose influence lasted well beyond the string of hits it had in the mid-1970s, died on Saturday in Trotwood, Ohio, near Dayton. He was 69.

Obit of the Day: "Sugarfoot"
Leroy Bonner ran away from home when he was fourteen. He headed to Dayton, Ohio. It was there that, along with several other musicians to create the Ohio Players a funk band who would record seven Top 40 hits in between 1973 and 1976.
They would reach number one twice with "Fire" (February 8, 1975) and "Love Rollercoaster" (January 31, 1976) off their album Honey. Mr. Bonner, who preferred his nickname "Sugarfoot"* was the lead singer on both hits.
Random note: The Red Hot Chili Peppers would record a cover of "Love Rollercoaster" for the film Beavis and Butthead Do America. It replaced the horn section with kazoos.
Although the lead singer, Mr. Bonner and his bandmates never placed much importance on vocals. They began using band members as singers because they were tired of losing the singers they brought in from time to time. The first song that featured Mr. Bonner on vocals was "Skin Tight" which would reach #13 on the Billboard Top 100 and #1 on the Billboard R&B charts.
Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner passed away on January 26, 2013 at the age of 69.

*Mr. Bonner said that as a child her earned the nickname "Sugarfoot" which he compared to "tenderfoot," someone who is inexperienced. As he got older he actually preferred the nickname "Sugar."

Lead singer of the Ohio Players passed away over the weekend after a battle with cancer, he was 69. A sad day in funk.
