The yellow-orange daisy flowers of Ligularia japonica (leopard plant) are over but the seedheads are providing a great display. This clump-forming, herbaceous architectural plant is ideal for moist or boggy soils that support the rounded, ruffled and deeply cut leaves.

Ligularia dentata (Leopardplant)
We have two species of Ligularia growing in the back garden though to look at them you might not realize that they’re in the same genus. I posted a photo of Ligularia stenocephala in early July and it is a tall flower-spike plant. Ligularia dentata is far more daisy-like and, in my experience, blooms a month later.

Enjoying a moist location next to a stream was the vigorous herbaceous perennial Ligularia dentata 'Desdemona' (leopard plant). The orange flowers are borne in flat-topped clusters above the large, rounded bronze-tinted leaves with deep purple beneath.

Growing amongst the architectural Dicksonia antarctica (soft tree fern) are the yellow flowers of Ligularia 'The Rocket' (leopard plant). This clump forming herbaceous perennial has strongly toothed, heart-shaped leaves and the tall flower spikes with small yellow flowers on contrasting black stems. The plant needs a damp location whilst receiving full sun, so ideal for a bog garden or stream side planting.

A native to the streams and seashores of Japan Farfugium japonicum (leopard plant) is a rhizomatous evergreen perennial with simple, rounded leaves and branched clusters of daisy-like bright yellow flowers in late autumn and early winter. There are several variegated cultivars - plants with golden spotted leaves being Farfugium japonicum ‘Aureomaculatum’ or those with white edged foliage being Farfugium japonicum 'Argenteum’. They have been used in green walls and raised beds in Tokyo, Japan, so bring much needed greenery into the urban environment and a plant reference to the countryside beyond the city.

Leopard plant (Drimiopsis maculata), also known as, little white soldiers, African false hosta, leopards ears, African hosta, leopard plant, and Injoba is a bulbous perennial flowering plant. It occurs from Tanzania to South Africa. Interesting note. Research says “The plants contain homoisoflavonoids portulacanones that may be toxic to some human cancer cell lines.” I’ve had these dear little bulbs for years. Every time I divide them I put them somewhere else in the garden. As long as they have just a little bit of moisture they’re happy.
