15 - things you said with too many miles between us

Dear Miss Barrow, 

I wanted to apologize for the events that transpired between us--

Leonie wanted to crumble up the thick paper and toss it into the fire. (Little did she know that that's what Cabal had done with her contract, days before.) Her stomach flipped and clenched as she read. 

I'm sure that it is of no consequence to you, the reason for my actions but I thought you should know that I never meant for anyone innocent to fall victim to this play. 

No, of course not. She wished he was standing in front of him so she could mock him to his face. Of course you didn't want to involve innocents. That desperate final act of yours was the act of a dying man, one who was not afraid to spill blood of anyone who got in his way. 

Forgive me, Mr Cabal, if I do not believe you. 

Your contract has been destroyed -- the first to go. It made a very splendid fire, which I believe might have been testament to your determination. Miss Barrow, you are a truly good and honest person, and I am sorry that you had to cross my path. 

May we never meet again, he signed, and she couldn't agree more. 

You poor, sad man, Mr Cabal. 

16 - Things you said with no space between us

"Your knees are in my chin." 

"Your chin is too big for this hiding space--" 

"Miss Barrow, I hope you realize how impractical that sounds."

"No more or less impractical than this box you have us hiding in." 

Cabal held up a hand in an attempt to silence her, though it ended up more with his fingers pushing her ear. "Quiet," he said, voice low and menacing.

She went still, straining to hear anything outside of their dark space. "Do you hear something?" Leonie whispered. 

"No." She couldn't see his frown, but she didn't need to to know the exact degree his lips were tilted to. "I just want you to be quiet." 

"I will kick you as soon as I can." 

"Well then, we might as well get comfortable. I would rather not get kicked. Ow, stop that."
