The land remembers

I went looking for wampum on the beach down at Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island (ancient homelands of the Lenape) but wasn’t having any luck so I jumped up onto the causeway for a change of scene and immediately found a whole smashed up wampum calm shell dropped by a gull so it could devour its contents. I loved how the impact created random shaped pieces so I picked my favorite and asked my friend Tecumseh @nativetec (Matinecock) to hook it up into a necklace. This Indigenous Peoples’ Day I’m thinking of the Pow Wow I was honored to attend last year. The Lenni Lenape people are the Native Americans whose tribe called NYC home for centuries before they were forced away. They gave Manhattan its name. Last year I went to the first pow-wow of Lenni Lenape people in Manhattan in over 400 years. It was beautiful and moving.
