let’s hop back to 2001 when they decided to remove the masked man from the musical :/ yeah okay they overused him in the demo BUT i’m still pissed that they removed his character completely !!! also cutting all numb :/ all that’s known is better as a melchior song but for a whole cast rant i liked all numb

the original musical on broadway: why did sater decide that melchior and wendla’s love scene should become consensual,,, off-broadway it wasn’t and that change was bad. hanschen’s character suffered some MAJOR lack of depth. the only person i can really appreciate the zero-depth approach from is jonny b. wright. otherwise,,, they take away all the sweet and teenage parts of the character and make him a caricature (YES THIS INCLUDES ANDY MIENTUS! IM SORRY!)

moving on to my absolute most vehemently hated piece of media ever: ANYA REISS’ MODERNIZATION OF SPRING AWAKENING. a lot of people love it which i understand but,,, she missed the point so HARDCORE in so many scenes and i could do a scene by scene breakdown of this lmfao but especially during moritz and ilse’s final talk? she ruins both characters thoroughly.

According to John, Hedwig (the original) is about her finding herself and who she is in the world. The sequel is basically “I know who I am, but I don’t have much time left. Now what do I do with the time I have left?”

He’s said in interviews that the tone of it is strongly influenced by the death of his father and his mother’s advancing mental deterioration. Not only have both given John a greater sense of how important it is to spend time with his mother before the time comes that he cannot, but a sense of his own mortality.

He’s mentioned the sequel off and on for over a decade with the majority of talk about it being during (and shortly after) his run as Hedwig on Broadway. He and Stephen had been workshopping songs, script ideas, and even giving private performances of what they had written thus far for friends and invited guests, but as of now, it is tabled again.
