He was nothing if not arrogant. Prideful.
β Do you really think to stop me? β He rose an eyebrow at her; there were corpses scattered among the ballrooms, the royal halls. He didn't seem to mind as he stepped around them like they weren't even there.
They no longer mattered to him, his nichevo'ya flanking him on either side.

a loud crash, then came distressed bleating, as the little goat found himself in a confusing predicament .Β heβd followed the appetizing aroma of a fresh baked pie to a windowsill .Β in an attempt to reach it, heβd sprung up on his back hooves and bit the tea towel that had been placed underneath it.Β instead of a pie tumbling over, heβd been met with a large box that covered him whole ! Leading the Dregs wasn't difficult. In fact, it was hardly any different to what he'd been doing as a lieutenant. Taking down some of the other Barrel bosses and pleasure houses, however, was far more difficult. Without his Wraith, obtaining information took far longer, and was oftentimes unsatisfactory at best. The fact he simply didn't trust anyone with something so valuable didn't help, either.
So it wasn't uncommon for Dirtyhands to do the work himself. He might not have Inej's acrobatic and stealth abilities, but he still had his talent for disguise and sleight of hand; the rest could be solved by picking locks and raiding documents in safes. Which meant that between leading the Dregs, running the Crow Club and gathering information he hardly ever took time to eat or sleep. If it hadn't been for Wylan, he might've forgotten about it altogether.
Today was no different. He'd staked out his next mark all night, completely forgetting about the fact he'd promised β well, promised was a strong word; he agreed if he had time β to go to the Kooperom for breakfast with Wylan.
If anyone would've suggested just a while ago that Kaz Brekker would ever be spending time with Wylan Van Eck alone, he would've wasted no time knocking some sense into them with his cane. But loneliness was a strong motivator. With Inej out at sea, Jesper back in Novyi Zem with his Da and Nina Saints knew where doing Saints knew what for King Nikolai, Wylan was the only Crow left. The only person he trusted. The only person he felt comfortable enough around.
"Oh, stop being so dramatic, Merchling. I told you I wasn't sure if I'd have the time. There's a lot on my plate at the moment." Shrugging off his coat, Kaz draped it over the back of his chair, before letting himself drop into it. He could feel exhaustion washing over him the second he was seated. Letting out a quiet sigh, he rubbed his face with the palms of his hands. "Can we go some other time? I need to look over the books before we open the Crow Club, and I need to brief a couple of my men on some things before they head out into the streets."

Meta + home
send me meta + word for a headcanon.
home in its most conventional meaning is a foreign concept to alina. she never had a home like other people had homes, no permanent or semi-permanent residence with members or her family, nothing she can really call her own. one can say that keramzin became alina's "home" but it's a really poor substitute for one, even with mal there. alina always knew she will have to leave keramzin, and that when she does, it won't be a "bye! see you again!" type deal. leaving keramzin has a degree of permanence to it. it means severing your ties to the place because you have grown past your need of it. you are no longer an orphaned child, you're an orphaned adult now, and you're going to have to make your way into the world and give up your place for some other orphaned child who needs it. so in a way, keramzin has always been transient. and to alina, it has never been home.
with all that being said, there is a degree of sentimentality in how alina views it. even ana kuya's harsh form of guidance and discipline is remembered by her ( and mal ) with a tinge of fondness. in a thread with pippa's zoya, alina thinks back to her time in keramzin and says i think i was happy here. that has a lot to do with alina's memories of the place which are closely entwined with memories of herself and mal. see, keramzin isn't home, but mal is. alina is at home with mal. there is the question post-trilogy about whether or not that's because they truly got along with each other or because some ancient power has caused them to gravitate towards one another. nevertheless, if you were to ask alina about home, mal would be the first thing to pop in her head. keramzin would appear there solely by association with mal.
in a way, the little palace would count as a second home, too, because once upon a time, alina almost felt as though she belonged there. for five months, she was able to live that dream-like reality in relative peace of mind, despite the anxieties brought about by being a new grisha/the sun summoner. that certainly cannot compare to the anxieties that came after, but for a time, alina was comfortable there and did not mind the idea of living there for a long time. once again, more than the place itself, it had a lot to do with the people she was surrounded by. the degree of comfort isn't quite the same when she came back to the little palace after so much has happened and changed, and the fact that they put her in the darkling's chambers helped so very little, but the familiarity remained there because she was surrounded by people she trusted and liked, though of course, the concept of it being home is now irrevocably stained, seeing as it became the site of so many atrocities.
alina does go back to keramzin, though. i don't think it's because she thinks its home, but because she thinks it's a refuge. keramzin took alina in when she had nothing and no one. before the world knew who she was, before she discovered what she was capable of. it feels very appropriate for her to go back there now that her goal is to become no one again, to rest after carrying such a heavy burden, to allow herself the capacity to just exist like children do, before big, responsible things are expected of them, until she is ready to be someone once more. home is not something alina had by default. it was wrenched away from her by the border wars, before she could truly know or appreciate it for what it was. alina had to find her home in mal. and now alina would have to make her home, in keramzin.
