Az egykori amerikai követség mosdója. Mohammed bin Abdellah, a marokkói szultán ismerte el a világon először az USA függetlenségét - még 1777-ben. Azóta a két ország viszonya különösen pozitív.

Tanger a II. Világháború idején nemzetközi területnek minősült. Hemzsegtek a városban az ügynökök. A rejtett kódfejtő-lehallgató szobát ekkor alakították ki, és az Operation TORCH idején fontos szerepet játszott.

Az étkezőt Bunny Williams és Frank de Biasi tervei alapján újították fel a pandémia alatt.

Az emeleti híd alatti sikátorban folyamatosan posztol két rendőr, őrizve a létesítményt. A háború idején a helyre Station Midway kódnévvel hivatkoztak. Az észak-afrikai partraszállásig az ellenséges ügynökök azonosítása és jelentése volt a követség megbízása.

Egy szárnyban a Békehadtest önkéntesei dolgoztak évtizedekig, majd idős óvárosi nőket tanítottak meg itt olvasni és írni.

1904 május 18-án Mulai Ahmed el Raisuli behatolt bandájával Ion Hanford Perdicaris amerikai üzletember tangeri villájába, és mostohafiával együtt elrabolta. Az eset miatt az újraválasztásra hajtó Roosevelt hadihajókat küldött Tangerbe. Ion és a haramiavezér sharif viszont a fogságban megbarátkoztak. A váltságdíjfizetés után szabadult Stockholm-szindrómás Perdicaris a fenti festményt készítette később elrablójáról.

Pickering Place

Down a narrow alleyway off St James Street sits a quaint courtyard, with Georgian buildings and original gas lighting. This is Pickering Place, named after the coffee merchant who first set up shop at the location.

18th Century Pickering Place, being well secluded, was a favourite spot for gambling dens and duels – though the small size of the courtyard must have made most confrontations rather short. The seclusion was also taken advantage of by royals from the nearby St James’ Palace (or so the story goes): in the cellar of the coffee shop was a tunnel linking to the palace, so the residents could sneak out to visit the ladies of the night. The coffee shop is now a wine shop - the fancy Berry Bros. & Rudd - and apparently the tunnel is blocked by old wine bottles (perhaps several decades’ worth of debris from the palace?).
