The Crystalâs Trail - excerpt 1
The Jedi scoffs, cutting off Tor Vizslaâs triumphant laugh. He makes a sudden about-turn, a sneer pulling at his lips. How dare she disrespect him in such a way? He expects her to be standing, ready to fight.
The Human Jedi is still on her knees, hands cuffed behind her and restrained by two of his men. She hasnât moved and her face is still blank with the notable exception of a cool stare and an eyebrow raised in contempt.
Tor feels himself bristles. He goes to open his mouth, demands a reason for her scoff but before his lips even part, she has the nerve to interrupt him.
âYouâre holding it wrong,â she says, her words as dry as the desert.
Tor blinks. He didnât expect that. Wrong footed, he doesnât think before he lets his mouth run off.
The Jedi looks at him like heâs an idiot beneath her notice. Like she isnât the one on her knees, facing certain death. As if he is the one in a position of weakness and not her, her connection to the source of her sorcery severed by the collar around her neck.
âThe darksaber,â she enunciates slowly, like sheâs speaking to a particularly dull-witted idiot, âyouâre holding it wrong.â
Torâs teeth clack together as he rears back on his heels. To insult a Mandalorianâs weapon-handling abilities is as taboo as taking anotherâs armour from them. He snarls, furious. He wanted to execute her in public, to make it into a grand show, demonstrating the might of Death Watch. But heâs not going to stand such a slight against him.
He starts stalking towards her, scowling and the darksaber still ignited at his side. Around the room, his men tense, preparing for the confrontation.
âAlso,â she continues, seemingly unaware of the change of atmosphere, âit really doesnât like you and wants you to put it down.â
That makes him stop, startled.
What the kriff does she mean?
In response, she scowls even harder. Her shoulders straighten and her chin lift, not in defiance, no, more like itâs habit she is unaware of. When she speaks, her tone is neither harsh nor defiant; itâs low and slow with a certain cadence to it Tor canât place. Bewildered, he feels himself straighten at attention and around him his people do the same.
âA lightsaber is a Jediâs life,â she begins calmly and Tor is suddenly hit by the realisation that she is lecturing them, ânot because it is a weapon but because of the crystal it contains. Kyber or not, a Jediâs crystal is, at once, a reflection of who they are, an extension of themself and an extra limb. You waving around that âsaber is akin to wear their wielderâs head on your belt.â
She pauses, like sheâs contemplating something.
âOr akin to display an enemyâs beskarâgam.â
Well, that got a reaction, didnât it? Jocasta watches with grim amusement as the Mandos around her flinch and try to put as much distance as possible between them and their leader and the darksaber heâs still holding. With a snort, she adds:
âAnd thatâs not even mentioning the fact that crystals attuned to the Force are more-or-less sentient. Youâre basically holding a person without their consent.â
