#Repost from the conservationist at @upwellturtles Video by @jim_abernethy Music by @BrockWilsonArtist --- A collaborative team of researchers from Upwell, @FAU and @Mercator recently released 12 satellite tagged hand-size juvenile leatherback turtles into the Gulf Stream Current off the coast of Florida. The data collected from these tiny turtles will help us better understand and protect them during the cryptic phase of their young lives known as “the lost years”. Emmy Award winning @NatGeo Cinematographer, @Jim_Abernethy accompanied the research team to film the release but never imagined the phenomenal footage he would capture, due to an unexpected visit by a blue marlin. From @Jim_abernethy “I followed all of the tagged leatherbacks, some diving down to as deep as 135ft, which was no easy feat with the pace these little turtles swim. As I descended past 130ft, my depth alarm began to beep, and then I felt something brush my back. I quickly turned to look over both shoulders, finding nothing on either side, although I knew I was no longer alone. That’s when this huge blue marlin came around my right side into the frame, probably curious about a vertical animal leaking air, in addition to the 30,000 lumen lights of my camera. It circled the turtle and I for about a minute before disappearing into the dark water. I’ve seen a lot of amazing things as a professional underwater photographer but never been with one of the last descendants of dinosaurs, the World's Largest Reptile, the Leatherback Turtle and the World's Largest Billfish, the Blue Marlin at the same time!” Both leatherbacks and marlins have adapted to live in pelagic environments over eons, but it is unique to catch them in the same camera frame.
