A Space God Spreads its Wings
âWhat is the first rule about approaching an unknown planet?â the captain demanded, crossing her arms.
âOf course itâs to scan for life, and I did thatââ replied the first mate, but she cut him off.
âWhen you saw that it held a pre-spacefaring culture, what was your thought process exactly?â
âTo keep our distance!â he said. âI didnât even orbit directly; I made sure we stayed close to the moon instead!â
The captain glared. âAnd did you consider for one moment the size of our ship with the solar sails unfurled?â
âWhat do you mean? We donât have enough mass to affect the tides or anything like thatââ
âThe shadow,â snapped the captain, pointing at her first mate. âI spend one night in sickbay, and youâve already caused an eclipse on a primitive world. Do you have any idea the kind of panic and cultural upheaval weâre seeing even from this distance?â
The wide-eyed look on his face made it clear that he had not considered that, but was considering it now. âOh.â
âYes, oh,â the captain said. She aimed one finger at the first mateâs face, and pointed the other hand toward the bridge. âNow you are going to come look at what weâve observed so far, and youâre going to tell me what you think we should do about it. Your answer will tell me whether you get demoted or just reprimanded, so think hard.â
âGood.â The captain led the way. âIf people are getting sacrificed into volcanoes, it wonât go well for you.â
Thanks for the idea, @flashfictionfridayofficialâ!
