Valens was the equivalent of physically touch-starved, and Reid was the equivalent of mentally/emotionally touch-starved. So I think that's one reason they fit so well together.
I like to imagine Valens is very warm all over, because his robes are his skin. So he would be the best weighted blanket ever.
Reid had a fairly normal childhood, but she's still unsocialized when we meet her. I think that's another reason they work so well together, Valens is weird too. The guy hasn't had a functional friend in centuries.
I think Reid has had maybe one serious relationship in her life, and they probably left her because of her emotional distance.
...Funnily enough, that's the same reason I imagine Leahy's ex-wife divorced him, too. Those two share a lot of similarities, and they would both hate to hear it.
Valens is fascinated by animals, but for obvious reasons has never been able to safely interact with them. Thanks to Reid, his current obsession is petting as many domesticated animals as physically possible.
