Le gars d'hier soir m'a fait des tours de magie (nous l'appellerons donc le magicien) et quand il me passait les cartes il me touchait la main a chaque fois (alors que je suis sûre que ce n'était pas nécessaire) et ce tout petit détail me rend folle. Je sais qu'il est très très romantique, et ce truc de se caresser la main discrètement c'est vraiment un truc qu'ils font dans les films, du coup j'ai l'espoir fou que ces contacts physique aient déclanché un truc dans sa tête.

En contant une vie entière, celle de Thomas Mann (1875-1955), sous forme de roman, Colm Tóibín joue encore plus gros que dans Le maître (2004, 2005 pour la traduction française) qui s’attachait seulement (!) à la vie de Henry James dans les cinq dernières années du XIXe siècle. D’autres romanciers irlandais l’ont précédé dans cette voie, avec un rare bonheur : Colum McCann évoque Noureev (Danseur, 2003), puis une Tzigane célèbre (Zoli, 2006, trad., 2007) ; Bram Stoker revit sous la plume de Joseph O’Connor (Shadowplay, 2019 ; Le bal des ombres, 2020). Le roman, donc, est suivi d’une solide bibliographie : l’auteur, ancien thésard, critique littéraire, sait s’y prendre. C’est donc avec le sérieux du chercheur – et la liberté du romancier – que Tóibín déroule, de « Lübeck 1891 » à « Los Angeles 1950 », les dix-huit chapitres de son livre.
