Happy @acotargiftexchange release day to my dearest giftee, @wishcamper! I'm so excited to finally be sharing this fic with you!
"Time will explain." - Jane Austen, Persuasion
It has been years since Nesta came into Azriel and Cassianās lives, and centuries since they found each other. Tensions run high, emotions stay hidden, and the Mother is exasperated. But fate has no say when choice prevails. Will they choose each other, or let their pasts define their future?
Thank you to my betas and cheerleaders who held my hand through this entire fic @climbthemountain2020, @xxvalkyriesxx, and @chelseamorninggirl. Couldn't have done this without you! You can read a snippet of the fic below, or the complete chapter on AO3.
Sunlight streamed through the billowing curtains that framed the balcony of Nestaās room. Her face warmed beneath its rays. The gentle glow pulled her tenderly from the deep sleep sheād finally begun to find each night. Beside her was a fresh glass of cool water, courtesy of the House of Wind. It was only in the surprisingly intuitive magic house that she finally felt safe enough to let her body rest. But this peaceful deep sleep had taken all of the nearly ten years since sheād moved in to achieve.Ā
The water touched her lips when she took a sip. It was such a small thing, being able to enjoy cooled water. These little moments reminded her how far sheād come since those freezing waters stole her human life and thrust her into this fae world. The years between the start of this new existence and the aftermath of the war that nearly cost her everything felt simultaneously like seconds and an eternity, and though itād been almost twenty years, sometimes it still felt like yesterday.
A shiver ran down her spine as she folded the blankets back, baring herself to the chill wind coming from the open doors. She loved sleeping with a breeze, the colder the better to help her sleep. Back when sheād been living in her apartment, it had been too dangerous. The first few nights sheād tried more than the wind had found its way inside. She pushed the sheets back further, along with the intrusive thoughts.Ā
As she pulled on her tight pants and bound her breasts, Nesta remembered just how bad it had gotten, and how sheād wound up living here.Ā
āSheās unstable!ā Rhysand yelled. Nesta flinched on the other side of the dining room door where her family was having breakfast. Sheād decided today was the day sheād tell Feyre just how bad things were, how much she was struggling. Nesta had wanted to save her sister the pain of it, had wanted to hide her failures, but it had gone too far. Here she was crawling with her proverbial tail between her legs to ask the person sheād been placed in charge of all those years ago for help. And instead sheād found Feyreās husband, no, Feyreās mate, screaming about the charges sheād placed on their card.
āIf you wonāt do something about her, I will,ā the High Lord had continued.
Another voice drifted through the crack, equally angry. āShe needs help, Rhys! Canāt you see sheās suffering?āĀ
Rhys scoffed. āSuffering with thousands of dollars of booze and a fresh male or several warming her bed each night.āĀ
āThatās enough.ā Feyreās voice shouted. Nesta took two steps back in response, hugging her arms tightly around her too-thin frame. She knew Rhys was right, and so was Cassian. It hurt that things had gotten this far, but she was so lost and so unsureā¦
The door before her opened and Cassian stormed out. He stopped suddenly when he saw her. From his expression Nesta could tell she looked as broken as she felt. āNes-āĀ
A single soft syllable from his lips and Nesta almost broke. But she wouldnāt, not here anyway. Forcing her arms to relax by her sides as she rolled her shoulders back, Nesta spoke as calmly as she could. āI came to speak with my sister.āĀ

Ready to see if these three idiots finally become lovers? I present a healthy dose angst, spiced with smut and fluff. Happy solstice @wishcamper! I hope you enjoy the rest of your fic for the @acotargiftexchange.
Thank you again to my betas @climbthemountain2020, @xxvalkyriesxx, and @chelseamorninggirl. Read a snippet below or the whole chapter on AO3.
The House had been quiet. Too quiet. Cassian was usually comfortable in the silence, preferring the sounds of nature over all others. Well, that was a lie. Cassian could listen to Nesta talk forever. And every word Azriel spoke was a gift, especially the quiet whispers they used to share in the dark of night.Ā
It had been so long since Azriel had confided in him that way, sneaking to his room and laying on the bed beside him, their wings brushing without a flinch from either of them. That should have been Cassianās first sign. But they grew older and Azriel stopped visiting. Now Cassian could understand why. A lot made more sense knowing he had a mate.Ā
No, not just a mate. Cassian had two mates. Two perfect mates that were so much alike it was almost uncanny. They went quiet in the same way, took space for the same reasons. Cauldron, they both preferred the farthest chairs in the room from the fireplace and had to have their backs to the wall any time they sat. Cassian didnāt like to ponder why they were so similar. Once he did, the doubts crept in.
Doubts that he was the reason they were so similar. That the Mother had made one mate for him and realized he was too much of a handful. Now he wondered if she was right to give him two, or if Nesta had simply been made for Azriel instead. They seemed perfect for each other.Ā
And that was the crux of the matter, wasnāt it. They were perfect for each other. But he wasnāt good for either of them. Azriel had hidden their bond for years out of fear, and Cassian had fucked things up with Nesta more ways than he cared to count. Itās why heād given her space, given them both space, after heād realized how truly fucked he was.Ā

Finally sliding into your asks for the 2025 ask game (I know, itās 2026 now, weāre ignoring it). You know I loved your Nessriel fic Time Will Explain (If We Let It), but the fic I enjoyed equally as much was Righteous Man. Geeking out over religious imagery and symbolism is a core memory, and Berlain has been a discovery. You know Iāll be reading everything youāll write in 2026, cheering you on, but Iād love me some more Nessriel! Perhaps some early dynamics, set during ACOWAR, when everyoneās still figuring it out and being dumb about their feelingsā¦
AAAHHHH Hello love!!
I'm so glad that I got the religious imagery and symbolism to a degree we could geek out over. As you know a lot of research went into that fic and I'm so happy that it turned out how it did!
If others haven't been enlightened to Berlain, you can find my priest AU Righteous Man on AO3 (along with other Beron goodies).
You have my FULL UNDIVIDED ATTENTION with an early Nessriel fic during ACOWAR. Get in my DMs this instant and spill all your desires because this absolutely needs to exist. Your cheerleading was fundamental in me finishing Time Will Explain (If We Let It) on time and I'm sure we could bring that energy back for this idea.
Thank you for being a bright spot for me in 2025, so happy to have met you and been able to gush with you!
