"And for our fifth battle, Johto's beloved Golden Boy will be facing off against world renowned ex-Champion Green Sylvanus Oak! Let's see what the Indigo League has to offer!"
As Gold walks up onto the platform on his side of the field, he is surprisingly calm and focussed. Even if this is a contest, at its core a battle is still a battle. He feels at ease. Green takes his place on the other side of the field, looking vaguely irritable, and Gold sends him a smile. Then the floor opens, revealing the field they would battle on.
Gold already decided on which pokƩmon to use, and as both trainers' platforms are elevated along with the rising battle field - a smaller scale model of the area around Sootopolis - he unclips two pokƩballs from his belt. Both him and Green send out their pokƩmon at the same time, and Gold's Typhlosion and Furret soon find themselves staring down at a Vaporeon and Volcarona on the opposite end of the field.
A countdown starts alongside the first notes of music. Bubbles steps closer to her partner and gently brushes her tail against his side. Both she and Turnip look excited and ready to fight.

The music kicks off for real, and Gold reacts immediately, shouting his first command. "To the centre!" His pokƩmon both dash off, going right for the mountain in the middle of the field, and Green seems to have given a similar order because so do the Volcarona and Vaporeon. Bubbles and Turnip are faster however, Quick Attacks carrying them both across the water as they - partners in more than just battle - move in perfect sync from platform to platform.
They reach the top of the mountain before their opponents do, stand proudly on the model volcano's rim with their heads held high, Turnip overseeing the entire field from above while Bubbles quickly half-curls around his feet, expectantly staring towards the two others rapidly approaching.
Green's pokƩmon soon get close, and Gold sees him open his mouth to call an attack. "Shout!" he instructs before the other can get any words out. The pair on the mountain responds, a scream powerful enough to shatter glass joining together with an earth-shaking roar as the two let loose a Hyper Voice and Roar attack respectively.
The audience stands noticeably tremble from the combined force of both moves spreading through the stadium, tremors passing through the ground like foreshocks warning of something greater yet to come. Unable to withstand it, Volcarona and Vaporeon are swiftly blown back to Green's side of the field, crashing down onto the platform they came from.
Gold doesn't give them a chance to pick themselves back up before he calls out, "Turnip, now!" Understanding the order, the fire type in question briefly tenses up, letting pressure build up for less than a second - and then lava is exploding from the back of his neck, the force of each burst shooting molten rock and fire through the air, up high into the sky. From his spot on top of the mountain, under the blinding light of the sun above, his signature attack's reach expands across the entire field, and he lets out a mighty roar.
As predicted, something greater does come. The dormant volcano that shielded Sootopolis from the rest of the world for so long finally erupts.
