Organization for Transformative Works
Hi, all! (or all ten of you who follow this blog, lol.)
The wonderful @lauralot89 recently posted about her difficulties in continuing this truly incredible fic series because of idiots in the comments on her last work.
I know that many people who've been in this fandom for quite some time have read Lauralot's works and may have even been following this series. If you want any more of it, make sure you support your author by going and telling her what this series means to you in her inbox! (Or leave comments and kudos on her works - or all three.)
For those of you who have not yet happened upon this series, I highly recommend you go read it, even if some of the tropes and elements are not usually in your wheelhouse (but mind the tags!) It features character development through found family, abuse recovery, and mental health awareness. And stuffed animals. And it is a major fuck-you to Endgame in that it was written in the time of "and they all live in the tower and have their own floors" and maintains that into the present day.
If you have read it, go kudos and comment it again. Authors really are fueled by audience responses and support, so please go and support your fandom authors!
Sorry if you're the wrong person to ask this, but I've been wanting to get into Detective Conan and there's just so much of it. I was wondering if there are any specific arcs besides the beginning that prospective fans should check out to see if it'll be their thing?
My answer to this question will always, always be the same. Go watch the third Detective Conan movie, The Last Magician of the Century, before you watch the show. The movies are not technically canon, but that movie has a lot of what makes Detective Conan good in it; if you donāt enjoy that movie, chances are you just arenāt gonna get a lot out of the show either. But Iāve gotten two friends into DC thus far and both of them started watching because of this movie.
If youāre really set on something canonā¦hmmmā¦Iād say the Naniwa Serial Murder case (vol 19 ch. 185-188/ep 118) or the Mysterious Passenger case (vol 29 ch. 287-289/eps 230-231). Both are fairly early in the timeline, involve decent mysteries, include good character writing, and tie into the overarching plot.Ā
If you dp decide to watch the show and are still intimidated by the length, @silverbulletsama made an excellent watch guide that shows you how to get through the show without encountering much of the filler, and you can find it here. You can also talk to me or another DC blog if you find that thereās a certain part of the show that youāre most interested in (the really interesting cases, the overarching plot, a certain character/group of characters, a certain pairing) and we can help you find relevant episodes.
When I was staying with @lauralot89 I made the mistake of letting her cat into the room at night because he was meowing just so pitifully. He got on the bed with us and proceeded to explore every inch of it, crawling over us while purring like a motor. Lauren eventually had to relegate him to the hall again because we could not sleep with the loud RRRRrrrrrRRRRrrrrr noise moving around the bed and the occasional sniffing breath in our ears. Anyway Laurenās cat is so sweet and so dumb, and I figured there needed to be a Milo Appreciation Post so that yāall will know heās every bit as magnificent and stupid as she says.
For starters, my first published piece of fanfiction revolved around (bashing) it. Yes, itās still up. No, youāre not getting a link.
That aside, I owe an almost unimaginable debt to it for essentially kickstarting my first online fandom (Iām pretty sure it was the impetus behind the first two forums I joined). What the down-with-Twilight craze was to so manyĀ ā00s kids, down-with-4Kids was to me.
Now that itās dead and all-but-buried, well⦠I miss it more than I probably should. So the editing standards were dumb as hell and the translation was lazy and all the voice actors would probably have gotten kicked out of Rocky Horror for being way too over-the-top, but damn if it wasnāt a big, blundering ball of fun. Which makes it, IMO, much more memorable than the Funimation dub.
If I want some cheap laughs, 4Kids has my back. If I want actual pathos, Iāll go with the original anime (or the manga, which I totally donāt have pirated access to no siree). Funimationās dub is just kinda⦠there.

Ok this is starting to actually bother me. Iām about to get real nerdy for a minute here so just keep on scrolling if you arenāt interested. Iāve seen this post from @lauralot89 about āoverthinkingā Mermaids and I am an absolute nerd for shit like this and I have a friend ( @clamcrabcocklekaworu ) studying to be a marine biologist SO. Youāve caught my attention and now let me dive into this a little and explain my theory on it.Ā Ā
(note the emphasis on the word theory here, polite debates and discussion is welcome but donāt get up in arms with me because you donāt agree with an opinion Iāve stated. These are my opinions based on research and personal thoughts on the matter. Weāre talking about mythical creatures here, itās not that important and Iām not here to fight over it)
Ok so Merfolk, theyāve been discussed for so long and like Lauralot Iām confounded by the questions repeatedly asked so let me just...science this fuckery for a minute.Ā
Consider, if you will, the anatomy of a Mermaid. Itās absolute horseshit from a typical stand point. Humans are mammals and to combine that with a fish...something has to go horribly wrong and some parts of the human half would become unnecessary deformities. So, how do we circumvent that to the best of our abilities? Well there are human sized mammals that exist among marine life. Dolphins. Have you ever read about dolphins? You should try it because holy shit if ever there was a human-like fish itās these things.Ā
So now to answer Lauralotās questions with this thought in mind:
1. their upper bodies would not be human skin. It might be a thinner version of the dolphin skin. Not quite as much toughness to it, allowing for hair growth and such because they are still partially human and from what Iāve read dolphins do have some sort of hair on their bodies, Iām not 100% on how true that actually is but they are mammals so I would not be surprised.Ā
2. Houses? What in the absolute hell do they need houses for? They probably migrate like dolphins or if they do stay in one area they can make use of existing caves as a den (because humans have the inclination to settle in one place) Maybe itās both and they have two or more homes. Also River Dolphins are fun.
3. well if they are half dolphin then chances are they are either partially or completely blind and use sonar. Third eyelid is a possibility but from quick google searches I donāt think they would. Dolphins can blink but apparently donāt do so as often as humans and you have to consider that their watery habitat would keep the eye moist and there isnāt honestly much need for a transparent eyelid.Ā
4. It makes more sense for them to be Dolphins, therefore making them Mammals and meaning they would have a Dolphin tale. This also changes how their tail would move and bend so no more of thisĀ āthe tail bends like knees and they can sit on rocks and shitā bullshit. Thatās not...how about we donāt. That makes zero sense and if they were real and did that weād have seen them. No gills, no scales. I imagine they would surface but instead of a blowhole like dolphins and whales their nose and mouth would function for that purpose.Ā
5. Well they would reproduce the same way Dolphins would. And that is incredibly similar to humans actually. They probably actually would be born tail first like a dolphin and it would be a hell of a thing because that tail would not be great coming out just saying. Eggs though? Really? Now you know damn well that would ruin every mermaid romance in the history of ever.Ā
6. Calves. Baby Dolphins are called Calves and I think that from a scientific standpoint so would a baby mermaid.Ā
7. Whether or not they raise their calves...depends on the type of dolphin I think and the typical habitat of these creatures. Amazon River Dolphins, for example, are independent of their mothers within two or three years.Ā
8. I donāt know how annoyed would you be if your limbs suddenly weighed like twice as much. Chances are theyād have a hard time standing up and figuring out how to walk for a while even if theyāve done it before. that would be disorienting as hell.Ā
9. I think based on that they are mammals theyād be fine and it would be relatively normal. I actually couldnāt find much on this but if youāre correct in suggesting that aquatic mammals do indeed have control I would be inclined to believe a mermaid would as well given being half dolphin and 100% mammal.Ā
10. I got nothing for this one, I think this is more up to like a H2O mermaids type discussion where they question the science behind just how much water something has to actually contain before itāll affect the mermaids changing back. Sweat is 99% percent water but evaporates on the skin so I donāt know the science behind that one.
11. I donāt think Dolphin skin is subject to this issue so Iām going to go with no. Research is pointing to no.Ā
12. I donāt even want to touch that anatomical structure, something has gone very wrong there.Ā
13. probably sneaky sabotage because humans are terrible and mermaids would go extinct real fast if humans caught wind of that.Ā
14. I mean...Iād like to think theyād be more intelligent than that and would probably be trying to get that stuff out of the ocean.Thatās just my opinion though.
15. Well they wouldnāt have tear ducts as from what I can tell dolphins donāt, theyāre under water and donāt need the tears to moisten their eyes. Thatās not to say that they wouldnāt cry, just not the way that humans do. Dolphins do grieve and mourn their dead from what Iāve read. Have you ever watched a human cry? Itās not just tears, itās an entire bodily reaction. I imagine a mermaid would be more of a vocal cry or a whole body shake like someone whoās crying hysterically or a combination of the two. Even just a facial expression. If this was the case you would absolutely be able to tell.Ā
Does that answer your questions? Do you have anymore? Because honestly I have fun researching this and looking into the behaviours of dolphins to compare them to typical human behaviours. Itās so clear adapting mermaids out of a combination of human and dolphins, the similarities are nuts and it pains me that I donāt see as many people working with this type of mermaid. Iāve grown pretty tired of seeing fish/human mermaid with their brightly coloured scales and this just makes more sense to me both from a drawing/writing point of few and a scientific one.Ā
However, I donāt claim to be an expert on dolphins and itās entirely possible that Iām wrong but I can only really go off the information I found when researching. I was working on an AU idea and delved into researching this stuff and then I remembered Lauralotās post (which if you havenāt seen it is here). Hope I was at least partially helpful in some way and Iām 100% open to discussion on this. I find very few things to be so passionate about that donāt give me a headache.Ā
i had some strange interests as a kid. i read The Pill BookĀ (different edition than linked) cover to cover multiple times. i really loved the color orange. i was very interested in/terrified by carbon monoxide. i also loved cats. just...so much. i liked pretending that dragons and unicorns existed in a world made of clouds. i was also super into watching star trek with my dad.Ā
as a child i was either obsessed with something or didnāt care about it at all. so -- not much has changed.Ā
tapioca pudding: favorite animated characters?
