Thinking about how the Dragon People in my comic get their magic.
Its a naturally birth-given thing, but only to "full dragons" not hybrids.
They call it their Stars. A Dragon's Star sits in the center of their chest just below the collar bone. Its not their soul tho. Theres no memories or personalities or anything kept in it. Just purely the source of their magic (which is of course golden orange, and fire based.)
If you were to take a Dragon's Star, they would become very very sickly and will often die, as its the main source of heat regulation. However if you take it from a Dragon who's already died, the Star will remain intact.
Many Dragon families have strings of Stars or wear priceless homemade jewelry containing one or two as a way to keep their loved ones memory alive, to show they lived once. Certain criminals might get their Stars taken away, or someone who died a disgrace might have their leftover Star destroyed. Great warriors and leaders will have their Stars displayed in grand halls, and made to look bigger and grander with glass.
There is only one way a Dragon's Star can change, and that is with how much they love something. If they love good things like nature, other people both Dragon and Human, etc. Their Star will flourish. Some think it is cause the Sun gifted them Stars, and the Sun brings life to other living things (Keep in mind this is a medieval time period).
If a Dragon loves bad things however, like murder or over-power or destruction, the Star will start withering slowly. Its not very noticable at first, and soldiers serving an evil king can go several years without much side effect, but it does slowly destroy them.
A flourishing Star grants even stronger magic; Going as far as to bring the MC back to life simply cause the amulet she was given contained a Star of a Dragon who spent their long life loving everyone around them, and purposely trying to grow their magic.
A withering Star grants blackened veins, painfully cracked skin around it, and will slowly stop preventing its user from being burned by their own fire, or regulating much temperature at all.
Lastly, flourished Stars taken from the dead could heal others, and will almost make whoever wears it their new user of sorts. It only needs to be worn near a heart of someone. Only Dragons or Humans, since their hearts are almost identical. It wont work on animals.
So say a Dragon child is really sick. Their family could take a Star of one of their relatives who'd died, and put it into a necklace or bracelet. When wearing it, the child will recover and stay stable until other help can be had. Dragons think it is a way for their ancestors and passed loved ones to protect their descendants.
With that said, keep in mind that majority of Dragons either debate, don't believe, or don't know that what they love affect their Stars. Most will think decaying Stars are simply another sickness obtained from serious stress on the body or mind, which is why they reason that soldiers and troubled people tend to get it the most.
Thus concludes my world building ramblings (and pls do not use this idea, I really wanna use it in my comic!)
