April 4th: Qing Ming Festival ("Pure Brightness," a.k.a. Tomb-Sweeping Festival, Chinese Memorial Day, Ancestors Day)- a Chinese holiday where people tend to graves of the deceased while enjoying the greenery of Springtime.
We biked up to the He family cemetery and ate lunch there. Erge killed two chickens, pouring some of the rooster's blood on the site marker stone. They burned paper money (for ancestors to spend in the afterlife) and laid out food offerings on the graves.

Pregnant Mama Pig goes on a walk. She is gigantic and mean. If a chicken pokes its head into her pen, she'll bite its head off.
A few days ago she gave birth to three tiny stillborn piglets. Grandpa said that there must've been something wrong with the father. Xuemmei bought two live baby pigs from the market to make up for it (so that they have something to raise this year, for October slaughter). Grandma fed the three stillborns to the dogs for dinner.

We made lots and lots of jam with the super sour apricots from a tree that hangs over our courtyard. The apricots are way too sour to eat, but with enough sugar the jam is delicious!
