Fuchsia brought me breakfast today. It was a lot easier for her to sneak out of bed but I did notice. I don’t think my sleep schedule has ever been this normal. I almost chased after her, but remembered the favor she did me yesterday and pretended to sleep a bit longer. It was cut fruit but I appreciated it nonetheless. She told me a trick about putting sugar on top of fruit. It did bring out the sweetness.
I knew our time was getting… a touch limited. But I was hoping she’d stay for longer. We were watching some old movie and she got a call. I didn’t know Nook phones could do that. But the call seemed… important. She told me not to worry about it for now but I’ve never been good at that sort of thing. She let me know she’d probably have to leave tomorrow after I pressed. I’m sure some work she has to do. It made the movie feel a lot more bittersweet.
Despite it, we decided to enjoy the rest of the day.
“Yknow, even though I live on an island resort, this is much more like a vacation than anything else.” She told me, “I get to relax for once.”
“I was worried it was boring.” I mentioned.
“You worry a lot, don’t you?” She turned to me with a smile.
“I do. I’m pretty good at it.” I replied. She laughed.
“You should do it less. Maybe it’ll do you some good?” She suggested, leaning on me. I thought about it.
“Do we choose to worry less?” I asked. The idea of choosing not to worry was sort of foreign, I didn’t really think it was a choice.
“My mama always told me, you can control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to it.” She held my arm. I nodded,
“I’ll think about that.” I told her.
We decided to go out and stargaze when it got dark. I’m thinking I should make this area more cozy… maybe put out like a blanket or something? I always come here to stargaze, the cliff behind my house. I even have a telescope set up. I taught Fuchsia how to use it, and she got to see the moon close up. She also tried to peek at the islands across the ocean, but told me she didn’t see much of anything. I think I have my best conversations outside at night. We talked until she got tired, and she told me she understands how I manage to stay awake all night. She said the sky here was beautiful. I told her she was beautiful. She laughed and told me I was beautiful too.
I’m already struggling to sleep again and she’s not even gone. But she’s resting peacefully now. Maybe I’ll ask how the Nook phones work and if I can text her. Or just letters if that doesn’t work. I have a hard time believing it all. I guess if I can believe that I’m somehow in a different world where the people are animals, I can believe that she loves me. I just can’t believe I get to call her mine. Maybe I am lucky.
