In case you missed last weeks webinar; repurposing content . . 🔬Skin Science: Darker skin - ethnic skin- skin type 3+, 4, 5 , 6 has differences compared to lighter skin types 1-2. The delineation of skin types is more complicated in clinical practice than the traditional MED (minimal erythema dose, ability to tan vs burn). Skin type 3+ can look like skin type 3, but react like skin type 5. We have all made this mistake before, & in some cases it is really hard to pick who will react briskly. Regardless, these differences are important to understand . . 🧑🏾🦲Melanocyte numbers are the same across races . . 👩🏽Melanosome are larger in darker skin types . . 🖐🏽Overall melanin content in the epidermis is more in types 4, 5, 6 . . 💪🏾Melanocytes are more active with a brisk reaction . . 👉🏿Screw up with lasers or peels & the fibroblast reaction is also more brisk (increased risks of scarring). The flipside is that this increased activity can be advantageous as dermal remodelling with HIFU, RF, Pico etc… is generally better cf lighter skin types . . 👀👍🏻How to be safe? Longer wavelength of laser, longer pulse durations, epidermal cooling, flat top laser beams, longer pulse intervals, lower the joules, pre & post skin prep & consider test patches. NA lasers over ablative, shorter PD ablative lasers, spare the epidermis with insulated RFM, stick to superficial peels & lower your concentration.
