Lapahns are stealthy and fast! Also notable that the one hitting Kuromarimo has the facial scar indicating that it was the one Luffy helped earlier today. I guess all that blubber saved him! He is doing much better than Sanji.
This is of course payoff for Luffy's kindness, but it also symbolizes that Drum Island itself is resisting Wapol's reconquest. The former Drum military killed Wooly Hippos and many, many humans, but when nature can, it fights back! Rather than being territorial against any humans who they come across, the lapahns have learned that some humans will not bother them. This comes back way later.
This theme of nature and humanity in harmony is of course played up with the character of Chopper, but it also showed up earlier with the hiking bear! Drum already has a dangerous wild animal that gets along with its people as long as respect is paid. Now, with the lapahns, it's gaining another.

Can we talk about Luffy’s kindness?
Even after being hunted down by Lapahns, he pulls out the buried adult, because the baby was crying.
A favor for a favor :)
This is one of my favorite sequences in the entire manga and criminally underrated. Luffy recognizes, just like he did with Chouchou, that these are animals defending their territory. They can't hurt him anymore. And now this poor baby Lapahn is crying for its parent, completely innocent and alone, so Luffy does the kind thing. People often compare Luffy to an animal and here he displays that kind of unselfish bond with another animal which you see in cheesy posts about cheetahs and service dogs.
It's also REALLY amazing as a feat of strength. Polar bears, the closest real life analog to lapahns, can get to weigh up to 800 kilo and Luffy is pulling it out of the snow one-handed while carrying two people. He isn't even using his rubber powers, so you can't quite compare this to stuff like him spinning Momoo around or stabbing Laboon with the ship's mast. Luffy isn't using physics to help lift this big cloud beaver. It's raw strength.
