hot take: ‘shop local’ makes sense, ‘shop black-owned’ doesn’t.
Local: improves your community, creates jobs, more likely to find USA (or UK, Cananda, etc) made things, specifically reminds you about the actual people living around you and how you’re a community
Black-owned: may or may not improve your community, may or may not create jobs in your area or even country, may or may not involve products made in your country, very likely to be outside your community and focused on skin color rather than community
Like seriously. ‘Buy Black’ comes so close to being precisely what this country (US, but also UK, Canada and most countries) need. We need to support and build community, we need to prop up people who may actually care about their local environment, we need to not have only soulless corporations as our options for our needs and wants, we need to stop supporting slave labor and genocide in China, we need to care more for our environment and treat our resources with greater car.
Buy Black doesn’t inherently accomplish this. It just as easily means buying inexpensive Chinese made things in a black-owned Walgreens as buying local. It just as easily means ordering something online from halfway across the country as buying local. There’s no community with someone who has nothing in common with you, not even location, except skin tone.
I love the enthusiasm and I love the idea of supporting our communities; I feel like the idea of focusing in on race as the definitive way of shifting power or rebuilding community is both divisive and undermining an actual sense of community in the actual physical places people live rather than a vague sense of a group you belong to. I don’t mind the idea of specifically wanting to support local minority-owned businesses, but that’s the key for me: local.
