Lane Splitting. A familiar sight during rush hour traffic in Singapore. A move that irks Car drivers to no end. Should you Lane Split? For the New riders, the biggest fear might be making a 'U - Turn'. Probably until you get stuck in a huge jam on the expressway. As you queue patiently behind the endless number of cars before you, you find your friends on two wheels wheezing past you. You decided to take the challenge and follow. Trapped between 2 endless row of cars, you start to think if it was a good idea to lane split. So what should you really look out for? SIGNALS. There are still drivers out there that Signal in advance before making a lane change. If you spot a car ahead signalling to change lane and there is ample space for him to make the change, slow down and let him pass. This will allow him/her to successfully make the lane change while you are safe from being run over. GAPS. Now, Gaps within the lane can pose a huge hazard for riders. It is the time when drivers can filter in abruptly to fit the 'Gap'. Always look ahead and observe the cars on the left or right and spot any intention by the driver to change lane. When caught in such a situation, try to reduce or increase speed accordingly to maintain within the driver's view and let him know of your presence. You might notice the driver gradually filtering in without signalling & if it is too close to you, tap the horn and alert him. SPEED. There is no justifiable speed to be in while you are lane splitting. The faster you go, the harder you crash. Slow a little and risk not being seen and getting knocked over. Over time, you will understand the traffic condition and adjust your speed accordingly. WIDTH. There are plenty of drivers out there, especially during rush hour traffic who constantly keeps a good space in between knowing riders out there lane split. However, there are ignorant ones that drive very closely to the center. From far, slow down a little and find a suitable gap either on your left or right to fit in before proceeding. The last thing you want is to rear end the car or knocking his mirror off, risking your balance. FOCUS. Take your eyes off the road a moment and you find yourself nearly hitting the side of a car. This is true & lane splitting requires 100% concentration. There are plenty of factors that will cause your motorcycle to kiss the ground. WHEN IN DOUBT, SLOW DOWN. Think you can't fit in the gap? Then don't try. We do not promote lane splitting or label it as anywhere near safe. If you have to lane split, do it safely. Even experienced riders find it a challenge as the road conditions change ever so often.
