but merbre was a converted heretic. she initially began following the lamb out of fear after they fought in darkwood early on in their reign, when they chopped off the tip of her tail and injured her eye. she just didn't want to die. so she goes back to the lamb's cult and starts behaving like a model citizen. she does her assigned jobs perfectly and efficiently, while constantly keeping a close eye on the lamb. to her, they're still her enemy; it doesn't matter that they helped her injuries heal without infection, or that they gave her a nice place to sleep, or that they're a really good cook and makes every meal with care. she's seen the lamb without the facade that they put up around the cult. she's seen how monstrous they can be. her habit of keeping an eye on the lamb eventually turns into her spending time with them, seeking them out in the confessional, going out of her way to work on new construction with them, hanging around the kitchen while they meal prep. she doesn't notice right away when her guard starts to drop, and not every interaction with them is spent looking for weaknesses. eventually, she accepts that the cult isn't a horrible place, and perhaps being raised as a devout follower of the old faith led to her being biased towards the lamb and their teachings at the beginning. she approached the lamb with an apology, and came clean about her intentions at the beginning of her stay in the valley. they have a heart-to-heart, the lamb admits that they knew the entire time but was trying to give her space because they were worried about confrontation, and they move forward on good terms. several years later, she's the first one to bring up discipleship to them, and they agree, performing the ritual a few days later. she then starts getting more involved in the management of the cult, and has more time alone with the lamb (it's during one of these meetings that she learns their name, and that she is the only one currently alive who knows it). they eventually become very close friends, to the point where, decades later, she died of old age and they almost immediately brought her back, and as soon as she regained her consciousness they ran to hug her in the middle of the temple. marriage was something that came up at one of their """sleepovers.""" merbre brought it up, and the lamb didn't outright refuse, but instead told her they needed to think about it. they got back to her the next day (they did not think much they just had to go die on a crusade to tell narinder how happy they were that it was finally happening). they had the ceremony, but they have not had a super in-depth conversation about the implications of their relationship
