“The distinction from earlier disciplines is key: whilst practitioners of black and white magic draw upon ambient aether, a red mage weaves her spells using only the reserves of mana with which she was born. In the era in which red magic was created, to do otherwise was forbidden.
To manifest more powerful effects, the first red mages adopted a method by which precise sword techniques would harness and amplify the energy of their spoken incantations--the mage’s own physical form serving as an arcane accelerator. An ingenious way of preserving their self-imposed limitations.
Understand that the blade we wield is not simply a weapon: it is the focus of all our efforts to lessen strife and suffering!”
X’rhun Tia, the last surviving Crimson Duelist of Ala Mhigo; Arya, the amnesiac mageling; and Lambard the traitor, from the lvl 50-60 Red Mage quests.
X’rhun is not only as cool as you’d expect such a flamboyantly stylish mage to be, but he’s also one of the kindest characters in the entire game. X’rhun’s defining character trait is how much he cares; he will help someone simply because they need it, and make sure they are tended to and safe before wandering on his way. He is also fairly jovial despite all the losses he’s suffered and so candidly shares. This is not a man haunted by his past and his failures, though he acknowledges them and the pain they cause, and a big part of these quests is redressing the slaughter of his order during the revolt against the King of Ruin.
The RDM quests come with cameos from familiar faces throughout the MSQ, from Father Iliud, to our pal Riol, to Jessie Jaye, deputy president of the Garlond Ironworks. The road the red mages walk winds all across the original three nations of the realm. And though the cabal is defeated and Imperial plans thwarted, the enemy’s final cryptic words concerning your young companion Arya hint at the next adventure for the Duelists.
