I went to Costa Rica with my family a few years back. People mostly speak Spanish there, though English is very common as well. I figured it was a good time to learn Spanish as it was something on my bucket list. I basically got to a very basic point and was really excited about using some of what I knew. The first day we got lunch and the server (about as proficient in English as I was Spanish) asked what I wanted to drink. I said, “La leche.” She did not know what I was talking about. And to this day I don’t know if it’s because of the way I spoke or because it was weird that a grown adult was asking for milk.
