knights    belonging    to    the    city    litter    the    cobble ,    joining    the    piles    of    carcasses    and     entrails    spilled    from   the    bodies    of    saurian    beasts .    contorted    shapes    of    men    lie    face    down ,    strewn    and    stepped    over ,    their    families    nowhere ,    their    death’s    disfavored    for    the    celebration    of    the    pair    who    stood    at   the   center    of   the    slaughter .

a     homely    pock   -   faced    woman    with    holes    in    her    teeth    took    guts    bicep    in    two    hands ,    squeezing    it    firmly .    a    surge    of    annoyance    came    over    him ,    and    he    watched    on    as    another    attempted    to    run    fingers    through    sephiroth’s    hair .    he    fought    the    urge    to    backhand    the    woman    as    her    weight    began    to    hang    off    of    him .

suddenly    the    crowd    parted .    the    women    fell    away ,    a     boy    was    collected    by    his    mother ,    the    soldiers    eyes    lowered    in    shame .    they    slank    dejectedly    to    the    outskirts ,    collecting    the    pieces    left    of    their    men    in    wagons   -   an    arm    here ,    a    leg    there .    a    decollated    head .

from    the    throng    a    man’s    voice    called    out    over  -  head ,    approaching    on    horseback .    he    was    ornately    dressed ,    robes    of    crimson    silk    hanging    off    of    him ,    his    armor    scant ,    his    stout ,    braided    horse    ostensibly    slow .    the    man’s    features    were    screwed    up    and    small ,    resembling    a    rats .    “  MEN ,    THE    CITY    OF    LYSTONIA    WELCOMES    YOU !  ”    in    his    right    hand    he    carried    a    scimitar ,    its    handle     embellished    with    gold ,    the    blade    of    which    appeared    to    never    have    brushed    bone .    it’s    all    an    act    to    them .

“  I    AM    THE    KING    OF    LYSTONIA          ”    he    continued ,    re  -  sheathing    the    scimitar    that    had    apparently    exhausted    its    use .    “            and    the    skill    you    pair    possess    puts    my    men    to    shame .    i    have    heard    of    mercenaries    in    the    area ,    but    it    would    be    foolish    of    me    to    compare    you    to    bribes .  ”    at    this ,    guts    began    to    tune    out .    his    ears    were    still    ringing    from    a    fresh    blow    to    the    back    of    the    head ,    and    he    could    hardly    focus    on    much    other    than    his    back ,    which    ached    terribly    from    where    it    had    dug    a    pit    out    of    the    side    of    a    tree .    he    looked    once    again    to    sephiroth ,    who    seemed    remarkably    unscathed .
