Angstober - Day 23 - Safe/Unsafe @angstober
What was safety? Hibari Kyoya never felt like he was safe.
When he was a kid, he learned with the teachers that a safe place was in their parent's arms, in their hugs, in their love, in their presence. If the kid didn't have parents or their parents didn't feel safe, they would say a relative or the house, even a room.
Yet none of those felt true for Hibari, his parents weren't at home, and the house always felt cold, his room felt more like a cell than a warm place. He couldn't understand what safety was no matter how much he tried, even for a kid he was too smart, so he just dropped the question.
But if there is something Hibari Kyoya learned very well it is what Unsafe was.
If he left something in the middle of the way and forgot about it, he would stumble and fall, which was unsafe for him physically. If he said something wrong to the wrong person, he would be scolded, which was unsafe for him mentally. If he tried to form some connection, it was unsafe for him emotionally.
Weirdly enough, he couldn't find anything that was safe, but he could make a long list of what was unsafe for him and as he grew older, Hibari Kyoya's list of unsafety only grew more and more with him. True he found a couple of things that felt safe.
By the age of sixteen, his physical strength and his lack of interest in anything and everything, made him feel safe. There was no way, he could be hurt that way.
Until that... He lost.
And he didn't feel safe anymore, because what was protecting him physically wasn't there anymore, his strength wasn't enough. He couldn't believe that he was bested by illusions, he couldn't believe that... But also he didn't feel safe in his own mind, since he believed in illusions.
He sat down in there, reflecting on it himself, there was nothing else making him feel safe, while everything seems lost, it also made him pissed and upset. He couldn't give up, he was strong, he just needed to be stronger, train more, and figure out what the illusions were.
Hibari Kyoya needed to focus on that, he needed to keep his mind on that, he wasn't going to let the despair of feeling unsafe take over him. Because if he did... If he stopped to think how useless everything was... there would be no return.
He knew he would fall into a hole so deep and so dark that no one would be able to pull him back, he may as well be one of those comatose people, who is conscious but lost their soul. He knew the darkness that he was suppressing very well.
So out of spite, out of anger, he was going to focus on being stronger, after all, there were only two things that made him feel safe, his strength and his mind. And he could do it. He could be stronger, he needed to be.
And he did. He trained and trained, more and more, harder and harder, as well as getting involved with Vongola. That, while it wasn't fully welcomed, helped in his process of becoming stronger. Also, slowly, he would figure out what illusions were, and what the Mist Flames were, and with that, not only be able to counter them but also produce the flames on his own.
He also had to slowly interact with the Vongola Guardian, liking or not, and that... For some odd reason felt... Safe? For once he felt safe in trusting the Tenth Generation of the Vongola Guardians.
Hibari Kyoya felt safe with a bunch of Herbivores and a crowd.
And that... That is when he broke down.
When he was 20 years old, he literally broke down, the years of suppressing the abyss of darkness from not being safe at all, took its toll on him. No one could say exactly what was wrong, as physically nothing was wrong with him.
Instead of the hospital wing, he was brought to his own room, the house he built to feel safe, and actually somewhat felt safe. Kusakabe not only did his work but also kept taking care of him while Hibari was broke, because he believed, believe that Hibari Kyoya would come back stronger.
During that time, Kusakabe made everything for Hibari Kyoya to feel safe, but also cared and loved. Purely platonic of course. Some of the Tenth Generation of the Vongola Guardians came to visit him and talk to him, weirdly enough even Rokudo Mukuro visited him.
For Hibari Kyoya, all of that felt weird. He didn't feel like he was in his body, he only felt the darkness around him, he hated that, every day he looked around he was trapped in that dark ball, much similar to Roll's ability. He felt the air thin, he felt everything around him draining him, that unsafety he hated and he fought. Fought so hard to push away.
"But... How about... Do you try to embrace it? Accept that... it's part of you, accept it's part of your past and present. Being weak isn't a bad thing. Relying on people who you trust and trust you back, isn't a bad thing... You have friends who care... So... You can accept this now."
The words that he heard... Weirdly enough came from the last person he expected. Rokudo Mukuro. But that made him think, was Mukuro right? What he meant exactly by that?
"Thank you for helping me when I needed... Now... Please let me help you."
It was simple, something that he didn't think she needed to thank him, even so, Dokuro Chrome's word, made him accept that, although small for him, it was a big thing for her.
"I'm your first friend, why don't you rely more on me? I know I'm weaker than you, but I will still help you as extreme as I can!"
Was that... The so-called friendship? Was that what this means? Was friendship something like that? Why... He felt safe? Sasagawa Ryohei had a weird way to get along with him.
"Maa maa... Hibari, when you will wake up? I'm doing my best to keep Namimori School the way you like it, but I really don't fit for that."
Haaa... so Yamamoto Takeshi was the one taking care of the school? For some reason... Hibari always thought that he fit way more as a P.E. teacher than what they do now... It was good to know that the School was in good hands... Was that relying upon him?
"Hibari-san... I... I know I'm no good for nothing Tsuna, but... I'm a boss now, right? I can do things. So, please... Tell me how I can help to diminish your workload?"
It was funny to hear Sawada Tsunayoshi say that, once he never wanted to be the boss, and now, not only he was but was also using it to their favor.
"Oi Hibari! Until when are you going to stay like this?! They said you had a mental breakdown? You are the strongest guy I know, not only physically but mentally. Did the years take a toll on you? You know... I related to that. Although mine was suicidal. But hey, we are all waiting for you. You now have a family who won't abandon you. Thicker than blood. So come on, get up and come call me Herbivore."
Gokudera Hayato... Not only smart but on point.
Hibari Kyoya thought for a moment that he didn't need friends, allies, or whatever, all he needed was his own strength and his own distance from people. But in the end, as he grew older he learned... He finally learned one thing else that was safe.
True friendship, although very hard to come by, when it actually happens it is very safe to keep it.
The darkness around him was still thick, but he could see some light in it. So that... That is what it meant. Hibari still couldn't understand what was the safety of a parent, he barely understood the safety of a house/room. But now he had one more thing, and that felt oddly relieving.
As if a weight were lifted off from his chest as he looks around. Sure things didn't change much, he pretty much still preferred to believe only in his own strength and only in his own mind. Yet... A small part of him wanted to believe in the thing that Sawada Tsunayoshi once said.
That they were waiting for him to return and that they wanted to him return, as he brought himself out of that hole, for once he wasn't scared of being unsafe, no... Embracing that as a part he needed to move on, only knowing what was unsafe would he be able to find more safety. Even if it is once every decade.
After the breakdown, Hibari was slightly different, at least around the guardians only. He talked with them a bit more, and he also was more open to accepting missions with one other guardian, cooperating a little more. Weirdly enough, for Hibari that felt... Right.
Slowly building that trust between them. Sure he was aware that betrayal was a thing, that is probably why in his heart he kept that still cold and stoic presence, just so he wouldn't be hurt if he was betrayed.
But for now? For now, he was going to embrace it.
Not only the unsafety but also the weakness, the fear, the anxiety... Everything that once he pushed away.
Strangely enough, by doing that he got stronger, not only physically but emotionally and mentally. Albeit one thing he made sure to do every day, was to be at least 1 hour alone, either nap or just drinking tea while watching his garden. That helped a lot with his mind recovery.
Safety wasn't the warm and fluffy feeling that he was taught when he was a kid, Unsafety totally was exactly how they taught, and while he took so long to learn that, he finally did.
So he could say that he felt safe... He felt safe around his friends.
He cared about them, while still paying attention to betrayals. But when he was out in missions he felt safe enough to believe that his back would always be protected by the other guardians.
