Summary, Sharing a meal with the Flame Hashira.
The fire crackled warmly, its glow catching in the golden strands of Rengoku’s hair as he leaned over the low table. The meal between you was simple, laid out in tidy dishes but to him, it might as well have been a banquet.
Stopping to eat at an open shop had been the best decision, given how long the day had felt. It wasn’t anything fancy but it was a welcomed reward.
“You must try this one!” he said brightly, already sliding a generous portion onto your plate with perfect courtesy. His smile was dazzling, his voice carrying that unmistakable cheer, as if he were declaring some noble decree. “The seasoning is marvelous, it would be a shame for you to miss it!”
You couldn’t help but laugh, his enthusiasm infectious. “All right, all right,” you said, taking up your chopsticks. You tried a bite and his eyes lit up when you nodded in approval. He looked utterly triumphant, as though he had personally cooked the dish himself.
But then you leaned forward, mischief in your eyes. Pinching another bite between your chopsticks, you held it out, not to your own mouth, but to his. “Then you have to try this too.”
He blinked at you, surprised. For just a moment, his booming confidence faltered, replaced by the faintest look of wonder. Then, with a bright laugh, he leaned forward without hesitation, taking the bite straight from your chopsticks.
“Delicious!” he declared, chewing with obvious delight. His eyes shone as though you’d given him the greatest gift in the world. And when he swallowed, he actually bowed his head a little, utterly sincere. “Thank you.”
The earnestness of his gratitude made your heart skip. It was such a small thing, so playful and casual but to him, it clearly meant more.
The game continued, the two of you exchanging bites between laughter and soft protests. He remained unfailingly polite when offering food to you, always asking first, always placing it carefully onto your plate. But whenever you held something out to him, he accepted without hesitation, as though every bite from your hands was precious.
At last, with the plates nearly empty, he leaned back slightly, still grinning but softer now. His eyes lingered on you across the small table, the firelight reflected in his warm, amber depths.
“Sharing meals with you…” His voice was lower, steadier, though still touched with that boundless warmth. “It makes everything taste better.”
Your chopsticks paused, caught off guard by the sincerity threading through his words. But he only smiled wider, as if it were the simplest truth in the world.
You laughed at his declaration, shaking your head as if to dismiss it but the words lodged themselves in your chest all the same. Rengoku had said it so easily, so sincerely, without a hint of jest.
It shouldn’t have made your face grow warm but it did.
You glanced at him, the firelight casting gold across his profile and found him watching you with that same unwavering brightness. He didn’t look embarrassed by what he’d said. He didn’t look like he’d even considered holding back. His honesty was as fierce as his flame, blazing openly where others would hesitate.
And in that moment, you realized how rare it was to be seen so directly, without hesitation or shadow. His eyes held you, steady and certain, as though you were someone extraordinary.
Your chopsticks wavered slightly in your hand and you lowered them to the table to steady yourself. “You…really mean that?” The words slipped out before you could stop them, softer than you intended.
“Of course!” he answered immediately, his voice booming. Then, more gently he added, “I would not say it if I did not think it to be true.”
You pressed your lips together, trying to contain a smile that threatened to break free. The warmth in your chest was nearly overwhelming, spreading through you in waves until you had to look away, as though his gaze alone might ignite you.
And yet, even with your eyes averted, you could feel his presence, bright, warm and utterly unshakable, like a flame refusing to go unnoticed.
You could only distract yourself by pushing the last of the dishes aside. Rengoku sat back with a satisfied sigh, his hands resting neatly on his knees. His smile hadn’t dimmed once all evening, but now it seemed quieter, tempered by the fire’s glow.
“That was splendid,” he said, his voice still bright but tinged with contentment. “Food truly tastes best when shared. Especially with you!”
You laughed softly, shaking your head. “You say that like we were treated to a feast fit for kings.”
“Why not?” His eyes gleamed, unwavering. “If I have your company, then any meal is worthy of celebration.”
The words hung between you, bold and earnest, once again carrying far more weight than his booming tone suggested. Before you could find a reply, he noticed the faint shiver that ran through you as you stood from the table.
At once, he moved. Without hesitation, he shrugged off his haori, the flame pattern fabric bright against the dimming fire light and draped it over your shoulders. The warmth of it clung to you instantly, carrying his scent, his heat, his unmistakable presence.
“Rengoku-” you began but he silenced you with a gentle firmness.
“You’ll catch cold,” he said simply, the brightness in his eyes softening into something almost tender. He leaned closer then, adjusting the fabric so it settled properly around you, his fingers brushing lightly at your collarbone as he tucked it into place.
For a man so full of fire, his touch was surprisingly gentle.
You met his gaze and for a heartbeat, the world stilled. His usual exuberance was still there but muted now, softened into something deeper.
He smiled, not the usual broad, roaring grin he showed to the world but a smaller, more private one. “It suits you.”
The fire popped in the small pit, filling the silence his words left behind. Wrapped in his warmth, your heart beat steady and fast, as if it too had caught fire.
