(Well I said I'd do it and I'm doing it. Kyvis Origin story, starting now. I've posted one or two other parts of this story here and there, so I'm gonna do a master post at some point! But for now, here's a link to the second part, and here's the first story! Set in a semi-futuristic world, but not so futuristic as to be unfamiliar)
Kate Davis considered herself a professional of her trade. Not necessarily the best, of courseânot yet. Sheâd never done a job that was truly legendary, that would have others talking about it for years to come. But she was quick and smart, and hadnât been really caught or seen for years.
Which was a good thing in her trade, which was that of a thief.
Frankly, Kate had never considered herself much good at anything else. Sheâd tried other things, and was currently barely holding down a job at the Starbucks near her house. But, as with the others, she knew she wasnât long for it. If for no other reasons than she was terrible at customer service, and tended to blow off work for her real job. And truth be told, nothing made her light up like the thrill of cracking a safe, slipping past guards, breaking into a house that was far too fancy for her to ever set foot in otherwise.
It helped that her targets were almost exclusively the rich, arrogant, and corrupt. There was something satisfying about taking from people like that. Her boyfriend, Derek, didnât seem to see it the same way. Heâd told her on many occasions that she should do jobs with his gang, that he was working where the money was. Kate had just laughed at himâshe didnât let other people choose her jobs.
Hence why she was currently picking the lock on the office door of a senator who was not only the proud owner of three houses, but was a bit of a creep as well. Heâd been at the Starbucks where sheâd worked a few days back, and Kate had seen him hitting on her co-workerâa shy girl who was just out of high school, making her easily a quarter of the senatorâs age. Sheâd gotten his name off of the order, and it hadnât taken long to formulate a plan against him.
The lock clicked, and Kate let herself into the office. Getting into the building had been embarrassingly easy, and she knew for a fact that the senator was out on a lunch break. That didnât mean she was going to sit around and wait for him to return, though. She had too much professional pride for that.
The safe was situated at the back corner of his office, not obscured by a thing. Kate rolled her eyes and knelt next to it. âYour owner is a moron,â she muttered to it, getting to work on the lock.
A few minutes later, it clicked open, revealing the contents. Allowing herself a smirk, Kate unzipped one of the pockets in her backpack and began filling it with stacks of cash.
She was halfway finished when she heard voices outside the door. Oh, noâheâs not supposed to be back yet. Smacking the safe door shut, Kate yanked the zipper closed. Slinging the backpack over her shoulder, she made a snap decision and darted forward just as the door opened.
She made it behind the door as it swung open, admitting two men. Neither of them was the senator, but both were talking animatedly, and didnât notice as Kate moved. âYeah, apparently thereâs supposed to be some kind of robbery here today. Thatâs why all those law enforcement guys are here. Weird, right?â
âYou can say that again,â agreed the other man as Kate caught hold of the door knob before it could fall closed. Silently, she eased it open again. âCanât imagine what theyâd steal from here.â
The first man snorted. âTry not to make it so obvious that youâre new. Now, what did Senator Littlejohn want from here again?â
Kate didnât wait to hear the response. Slipping through the doorway, she let the door drop closed as she turnedâand ran smack into someone.
Stumbling backwards, she caught a brief impression of a man wearing a button down shirt and a frown. Oh, crap.
âYouâre not supposed to be up hereââ he started, and Kate cut him off by doing the only thing she could think of. She punched him in the face with a satisfying crack, and took off down the hall.
She heard shouts behind her, but didnât stop. At least, she didnât stop until she careened around the corner and came face to face with another man. This one, unfortunately, was holding a gun.
âGood afternoon, miss,â he said, his voice mild and polite, with what sounded like a British accent. âWould you mind putting your hands in the air? Iâm afraid youâre under arrest.â
Kate held back a groan, but did what he said. Double crap. Just when I say what I did about not getting caught.
Her backpack was taken, and she handcuffed and led down the hall to a meeting room, empty except for a table and two chairs. Kate was cuffed to one of them, while the man whoâd stopped her took the one across from her.
âIâll admit, it was mostly good luck we caught you,â he said conversationally. He was older, with graying brown hair, and was dressed in a neat, inexpensive suit. âNone of us had the faintest clue you were already in the building. It was just bad luck for you that had us sweeping this floor when you were sneaking out. Bad luck for Chambers, as well,â he added as Kate heard the door behind her open. âHowâs the nose, Chambers?â
âCould be worse, sir,â came the reply, and Kate glanced up as the man who sheâd punched stepped into view. His nose was swollen and crooked, and he wore a frown that deepened as he met her gaze. Folding his arms, he settled behind the older man, like he was waiting for judgment to be passed on her.
Kate already disliked him.
The sound of a throat being cleared pulled her attention back to the older man, who was flipping through a file. âWe also didnât know it was you comingâwell, not for sure,â he said. âWe had a list of thieves that were known to hit targets like this, but we very nearly took your name off the list. We would have if Chambers hadnât brought it to my attention that you work at one of those American coffee shops the good senator likes to frequent.â
Kate couldnât hold back a scoff, and the man glanced up at her. âYou disagree?â
âWith the good part, yeah,â Kate said flatly. âHeâs a creep, and if youâre here defending him that makes you just as bad.â
âWeâre not defending his actions, weâre preventing you from breaking the law,â the other manâChambers, Kate thoughtâspoke up. âHis wrongdoings donât make yours right.â
âI disagree,â Kate said. âI think anyone who takes payoffs from drug cartels and worse deserves to have his money taken.â
âA sentiment Iâm sure youâre not alone in,â the first man cut in. âHowever, thatâs not what weâre here to discuss, MissâDavis, isnât it? Kate Davis?â
Kate didnât answer. The less you give them, the better, she thought. Because things could only get worse from here.
âWell, Miss Davis, Iâm Agent Andersen. And Iâm here to offer you a chance to escape from your otherwise unpleasant fate.â
That got Kateâs attention. Frowning at him, she said, âI was just caught robbing a senator. If Iâm lucky, Iâm going away for that. But most likely, youâre going to take me out to some back alley and get rid of me.â
âThatâs what you think of us?â Chambers said, a look of disgust crossing his face.
âThatâs how law enforcement works these days,â Kate shot back. âSurprising that you donât know that, Officer. Or maybe you are as dumb as you look. I did think I heard an echoing sound when I punched your stupid faceâis it actually hollow in there?â
He frowned even more deeply, and Andersen spoke up. âMiss Davis, we are not going to kill you. Youâre quite right in your assessmentâmost government agencies are corrupt these days in the States. Luckily for you, Iâm not from the States. And catching criminals is something of a passion for me. So your deal is as followsâyou hand over the person we ask for, someone more valuable, and you go free. Otherwise, you go to prison. Simple as that.â
Kate felt her gut plummet. âBut itâs not,â she said. âAnd you know it. Because prison is a death sentence for almost everyone these days.â
âIn most situations, yes,â Andersen agreed calmly. Meeting her gaze squarely, he asked, âSo. Would you like a way out?â
Oh, she hated this. She hated the idea that this man with his accent and his strange manner, to say nothing of his scowling sycophant, were in control of her life.
Fun fact #5: Kyle's favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Some of his best memories growing up are the ways his family would celebrate it: first just him and his mom, and then his stepfather, and stepsisters!
Kate's favorite holiday is Christmas, because she loves the music and the lights, and the story behind the season

Today's @monthly-challenge Spring Fling prompt: puddles! I have a little short about some of my OCs for y'all in these trying times
The parking lot behind the building where Kyle worked was pockmarked with potholes. It was a side effect of a government that largely didnât care about the people anymore, which meant more and more small things that the city would pay for were getting overlooked in the wave of corruption swallowing the country.
It was also kind of annoying, but Kyle had gotten used to evading the largest of them. At this point, it was almost part of his routine, and he barely had to look down to do it.
Which was why he was a little surprised when, on his way across the parking lot, he felt a wave of water wash over his feet.
Startled, Kyle looked down. He knew it had rained the night before, and had been avoiding the puddles left in the potholes without really thinking about it. In fact, he still wasnât in one of the puddles.
Slowly, he turned to look to his left. Kate, who was coming into work for a briefing, was standing next to him, trying to look just a little too innocent. And she was also standing in the middle of one of the shallower potholes, water resettling back around her Doc Martens.
âWhat are you doing?â Kyle asked.
Grinning a little, Kate said, âWhat does it look like Iâm doing?â
âTrying to drown my shoes?â
She rolled her eyes. âOh, Chambers. Donât tell me you never jumped through puddles as a kid.â
âAs a kid, probably, yes,â Kyle said.
âWell, I see no reason why kids should get all the fun. Youâve gotta seize joy where you can find it, after all. And donât worry, itâs only partially the joy of drowning your shoes.â
This was where he should have frowned in disapproval, like he used to when she made a joke. Unfortunately, since marrying Davis, he had somewhat given up on that attempt, and a laugh slipped out. âIs this the kind of behavior youâre gonna teach our kid?â
âAbsolutely,â Kate assured him, and he laughed again.
âI guess I canât really begrudge you that.â
âExcellent,â Kate said, hopping out of the pothole and heading towards the next puddle with glee. And if Kyle watched her go with a little more fondness than was strictly professional⌠well, they were supposed to be married now. It was all for the cover, nothing else.
I promised @laughingphoenixleader that I would post this, so have a little story, beloved friend! Featuring a new OC that my girl @accidental-spice came up with!
âKyle, DARLING!â
Kyle managed, shockingly, not to flinch at the ominously familiar, sing-song voice. Looking up briefly from his paperwork, his worst suspicions were confirmed at the sight of a tall woman, elegantly dressed, her hair dyed in vibrant streaks of blue and pink.
âGloria,â he said evenly. âHow was Belgium?â
Gloria Bartlettâ undercover agent extraordinaire when she wasnât Kyleâs partnerâ took a seat on the corner of Kyleâs desk, smiling widely. âFabulous. Tried some waffles, took a tour of a few churches, and shot some people. Howâs home been?â
âItâs been fine,â Kyle said, redirecting his attention to the paperwork in front of him.Â
âReally? Just fine? Honestly, Kyle, you never give me any proper descriptions of things. What all happened? Is Andersen eating properly? Did Maryemeâs youngest get that part in the play? And whatâs Ivan been up to?â
Without looking up, Kyle said, âMore or less, yes, and heâs still single.â
âRude,â Gloria huffed with annoyance. Kyle ignored itâ everyone knew that Gloria and Ivan were head over heels for each other. With, of course, the exception of Gloria and Ivan. Kyle had long since elected to stay out of it. âWell, are there any cases I should know about?â
Kyle opened his mouth to tell her noâ and then stopped. Because she was one of Andersenâs top agents, and his partner. So, technically, if anyone should know about this, it was her.
But he really, really didnât want to tell her about it. And by it, he meant Kate.
Unfortunately, Gloria caught his hesitation, and arched an eyebrow at him. âSomething youâd like to share?â
âWe found an informant on Alban.â
Gloriaâs eyes widened.
Sheâd been there, right next to him, when Andersen had found his family dead by Derek Albanâs hand. His wife and two daughters, killed brutally. Kyle shuddered internally at the memory. They both knew what catching Alban meant to Andersen.
âOkay,â she said slowly. âTell me as much as you can.â
Kyle paused, collecting his thoughts. âKate Davis. Sheâs a thief who was in a relationship with him. But he abandoned her after we caught her robbing one of the local senators.â
Nodding, Gloria said, âGood for her.â
âNot exactly,â Kyle said, âbut Iâm not going to argue that point with you right now. Sheâs given us a lot of intel on some of his previous crimes, and his hideouts. Itâs turned out pretty well for us. We havenât caught him yet, but weâve brought in several of his men, caught a mole in the department, and weâre close to catching up with him.â
Gloria grinned. âThatâs fabulous news. Then why so hesitant?â
She would notice that. âUm. Itâs complicated. Kate isâ that is, Iââ
âGood afternoon, Gloria.â
Andersenâs mild voice cut through Kyleâs stammering, and they both looked up to see their boss holding a mug of tea. âI take it Kyleâs giving you his news?â
Chuckling, Andersen said, âCut him some slack. Telling you he got married while you were gone canât be easy.â
Oh boy. Kyle winced as Gloriaâs jaw dropped.
âYou did WHAT? Waitâ oh, wow. Oh, stars. Kyle, did you fall in love with a criminal?â
âNo,â Kyle said, his voice sharper than it should have been. âItâs not like that, she needed help.â
âSo you married her?â Gloria said, her eyes sparkling with amusement. âSo logical.â
âItâs notââ Kyle cut himself off, taking a deep breath. âOkay. Iâm going to explain this to you in three sentences, and then youâre going to go away and let me finish my paperwork.â
âI will make no such promise. But give it a shot.â
âSheâs pregnant with Derek Albanâs child.â Kyle saw Gloriaâs eyes go wide, and continued. âShe didnât want him to find out and use the baby as leverage, so I offered to pretend to be the babyâs father, and marrying her is what I would do if it was real. Now please go away.â
Gloria stared at him, her mouth open, for a long moment. Then, hopping to her feet, she said, âI see where this is going. Now if youâll excuse me, I need to go ask Ivan and Maryeme for the tea about this situation. Later.â
âGloriaââ Kyle groaned as she sailed away, looking delighted. Well, that canât possibly go badly.
7. What fictional character do you think most influenced them, or is most like them (intentionally or not)? Kate is kinda just her own person, I think? There are characters she's like, but I can't think of anyone who influenced her. Kyle started out as a rip off of Kyle Moseby from Frequency 2016 down to the face claim and I stand by it. He's grown since then, though
15. What superhero are they most like? Ironically, Kate's face claim is a superhero! Thea Queen from the Arrow tv show. But she reminds me most of... yeah it's probably Rocket the Raccoon. Or Yelena!! Kyle is obviously Steve Rogers
21. What is their love language? OOOOOOH GOOD GOOD QUESTION. Okay I've said Kate's is probably quality time and/or physical touch. Kyle is probably an acts of service guy for other people, but physical touch is also a big one for him
