What I found to work - assuming you catch 'em before they really get going, I mean - is stretching the muscle that's cramping up. For me, because it's invariably my right calf muscle, I find that rolling my foot in a circle and pointing my toes downward gives just enough stretch to the muscle to loosen things up. Keeping it warm helps, too, as that relaxes the muscle anyway.

I used to get 'em all the time when I was a kid, so my body's just basically evolved an early warning system that wakes me up when they're on the way now.
