I would read it if you decided to write that essay, especially bc I was never brave enough to write my own essay on how the epilogues are specifically cruel and mocking towards fanfiction and fanfiction authors!

i do not have the energy for HS and i kind of refuse to afford it any more time/fan labor than passing mentions, esp given how they have handled their use of fan labor, which i find abhorrent

but its not actually an essay about that. the Ultimate Self has to be divorced from fanwork honestly or else it’s even more of a stupid faux philosophical fuckup.

basically the thesis is: so much of HS was about how the deterministic paths of society were bogus, that they were made up or arranged by an asshole cueball, that everything about “this is who you have to be” was bullshit, that the fucking point was everyone could choose their own path in the end and not be shackled to their origins and the mores of their societies

(Earth A, Earth B, Alternia, Beforus, even Calliope, everything is BUILT ON THIS BEDROCK FOUNDATION THEME OF THE ENTIRE FUCKING STORY)

..... that to then say “Dirk literally cannot help being the bad guy bc his Ultimate Self is a bad person because there is like a fifth of his soul stuck in the Big Bad of the series and therefore Dirk is just as bad as Caliborn”

is literally so fucking asinine it makes my eyes roll right out of my fuckign skull.

the Ultimate Self was an eleventh hour saving throw in which Hussie realized with the Retcon he effectively erased all of Jade’s characterization for the majority of the comic, which was literally his failure as a writer. and failures happen! you fuck up sometimes, and if you can, you try to fix it. so the Ultimate Self was this ass-pull explanation to try and band-aid the damage done to Jade’s character.

to then take that shitty last minute remedy and use it to break the characterization of Dirk just because its edgy and cool to throw out who he is and make him a manipulative fuckwit that’s now randomly a transphobe was

certainly a Fucking Choice to make
