I'm still reading Mistborn Book 2: Well of Ascension and I love it. I'm close to finishing it and I'm so sad and tense about it.
Spoiler Alert: I will share my thoughts on specific parts of the book so move on if you wanna avoid the story TW: mentions gore and suicide with minimal details
Now that I grabbed your attention by showing where my brainrotted brain went. I wanna discuss how the air around the story is pretty bleak. (P.S. I have the six seven meme but I just love messin' with my homies every time it's brought up)
Part III: King has really good conflicts even if they just came out of nowhere. They connected so well together. The siege, the deepness theories, the AMONGUS game that the enemy Kandra is playing, the literal rejection Elend got, dear god, it's so scary how anything bad could just happen at any moment yet it surprises with something you never seen comin'. I never expected Cett to be in the enemy territory that early on in the story. It is so sad that Democracy didn't go well for Elend. I respect the guy so much but I feel bad that, despite everything, He never got the respect from his Assemblymen. He brought Democracy to his kingdom with pretty solid rules and he got overthrown faster than the Lord Ruler. For me, Elend is the king they deserved but never wanted. I wanna draw Vin someday but I wanna specifically draw the scene after she smashed a guy's head with her headbutt. I can imagine the dramatic horror of her covered in blood while keeping that aura of beauty and grace on that scene and I would LOVE to make that. Part IV: Knives is a good Mid-point. It's similar to Mistborn's Part III: Children of a Bleeding Sun but Parts 3 and 4 goes great as separate chapters. Part 3 definitely has more focus on Elend and the Kingdom while Part 4 is more on Vin and the aftermath of the whole King Part. One thing that keeps me frustrated and it also made me frustrated on the first book is THEIR RELATIONSHIP. Vin and Elend has the communication skills of Geodes. Geodes hold all the knowledge but only releases them when they're cracked open. VIN, ELEND, YOU LOVE EACH OTHER! PLEASE JUST EXPRESS ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS AND FEELINGS! LIKE, ACKNOWLEDGE THAT, GODDAMN IT!
In the first book, I don't trust Elend at all but he grew on me during the chapter where Kelsier dies. Despite that, the whole sharing secrets part got me frustrated. Like, VIN, NO, Don't share the fact that you hang with your people! That shit's dangerous. For this book their insecurity frustrates me. That's what makes their love story so good though. The fact that they love each other but they're so insecure to be honest to each other feels so real and relatable. I'd like to let you know that I am Aromantic and love stories aren't my thing. Nothing got me this frustrated in a good way from the love stories I heard. It's not trope slop and their dynamic feels so unique and endearing in a way. I support their relationship so much and they deserve to be happy with each other. I was ABSOLUTELY HAPPY that they finally got married to each other in the end. Sure, they didn't express all of their thoughts. Their love still stayed true in the end and I'm pleased. WHERE THE FUCK IS MARSH? They teased a bit of Steel Inquisitor appearances here and there BUT I WANT MARSH. He's the MOST mysterious character as well as the most interesting one I wanna see more off. I hope I'll see him again after Part 5 or 6. Either way, WHERE ARE YOU, BALD MAN?!
One thing that got me to giggle is this quote. Like it's so funny to read this out of context. Imagine you were reading on the part where he's thinking of how to rig the elections and you skip a few pages and read this. It also gives me vibes of "Mommmmm, the dog ate my homework." I am honestly so disappointed of Zane because he literally became a NiceGuy^(TM by reddit) after getting rejected. I never vibed with Zane but I still find the "Kill Him," God Whispered quote funny from him out of context. Despite the fact I didn't vibe with him. I wanted him to join the team and beat Straff together and it's a big shame that it didn't go that way. It's hella surprising that I learned that the Imposter from AmongUS is OreSeur. He was the enemy kandra and IT MAKE SENSE and that's genius. His real name is apparently TenSoon and OreSeur was dead before he became a dog. RIP Lord Renoux OreSeur; they will be missed. I loved his redemption arc at least. All that talk about lowkey breaching the contract and having the autonomy to do what is good has done them well. So sad that he has to leave tho. I hope he comes back in Book 3: Hero of Ages.
Speaking of Hero of Ages; I accidentally spoiled myself with Hero of Ages twice. First, it was from the first book and that's where I learned about Spook. I learned later on that Lestibournes was Spook and that pretty much surprised me. Second, apparently I caught a glimpse of Marsh planning to kill himself. I was like WHAT, NO, DON'T YOU FUCKING DIE MARSH. like MOTHERFUCKER, YOU DIDN'T EVEN TELL US HOW WE MAKE MORE STEEL INQUISITORS AND I WANNA KNOW MORE ABOUT YOU. Like I care more for Marsh a lot and I want to see more of him. I still don't wanna get too spoiled and if you wanna know how I feel about spoilers. I'm fine with light but if it's like the ending and stuff, DON'T. It's a shame though cause my dumbass caught a glimpse of one of the last chapters when I was skipping and skimming to get to the Ars Arcanum section. I learned that ELEND IS ON DEATH'S DOOR. I can't like I'm scared. I don't want him to die, chat. I DON'T WANT HIM TO DIE LIKE KELSIER. He had a good plot line alongside with Kel. (I swear if Brandon does have a pattern of making his coolest characters die per book like how Stranger Things does their good chracters. I'd crash out for a bit) I'm invested in Elend's dreams and character. He's developed well and if he's gonna end up like Kelsier but without getting he messiah title, then I would literally be MEGA SAD. It also makes me think, if Elend dies, would Vin end up as brutal as Kelsier too? Like think about the implications. It would be soul-crushing if Vin is in pain through the entirety of Book 3. Sure, she's abused to hell for most of her life BUT I want her to live long and happy too. A happy Vin is a happy life. She deserves the best, man. I'm determined to finish Parts 5 to Epilogue soon cause I have so many questions to answer and so much plot to uncover.
