The Scent of Lilac: Dawn After the Storm
Kanao (kny) x female reader

Part 1
The first few days after Kanao’s return felt like a dream woven from sunlight and the scent of freshly brewed tea. The rain, which had tormented you for so long with its monotony, finally ceased, leaving behind only freshness and sparkling droplets on the wisteria leaves. The Butterfly Mansion came alive. Kanao truly did not leave your side for a single step. She slept beside you, ate beside you, and even when she had to report the mission results to Shinobu-sama, she did it so quickly that you didn’t have time to feel the cold of her absence.
However, your physical state was no illusion. Your belly had become so heavy that every step was a struggle. The little one, who used to merely nudge, now felt as if they were trying to push your ribs apart, preparing to enter the world.
"You’re frowning again," Kanao’s quiet voice pulled you from your thoughts.
You were sitting on the veranda, turning your face toward the soft rays of the morning sun. Kanao sat down beside you, carefully covering your palms with hers. Her fingers, once forged only to grip the hilt of a sword, now moved with incredible tenderness, stroking your swollen wrists.
"It’s just... I feel like time is running out," you whispered, turning your head toward her. "The fear is gone, Kanao. But in its place has come a strange premonition. As if I’m standing on the edge of a cliff, waiting for the wind to blow."
Kanao looked at you intently with her violet eyes. There was no longer that emptiness that used to frighten those around her. Now, an endless depth of love and a lingering trace of anxiety swirled within them. She knew that as a Slayer, she could protect you from a demon, but she was powerless against the laws of nature.
"I will be your wind," she replied, pressing her forehead against yours. "If you fall, I will catch you. If you are in pain, I will share that pain. Remember? I’m not going anywhere."
She reached toward your belly and pressed her ear against it. At that moment, the baby moved again, and Kanao couldn’t help but smile. That rare, sincere smile always made your heart stop.
"He is very strong," she whispered. "I can feel his rhythm. He’s just as stubborn as you are."
The evening of that day passed in an unusual silence. Even the perpetually busy Aoi visited less frequently, as if sensing a special atmosphere thickening in your room. Kanao helped you unbraid your hair, her fingers sliding slowly through the strands, soothing and lulling you. The scent of lilac hung in the air again—Kanao had brought a fresh branch and placed it in a vase to cheer you up.
But at night, everything changed.
It began around three in the morning. You woke not to a sound, but to a sharp, paralyzing sensation in your lower abdomen. It wasn't like the usual Braxton Hicks contractions. This was a heavy, searing pain that gripped your insides like a vise and didn't let go for several long seconds.
You let out an involuntary cry, pressing your hands to your stomach.
Kanao, whose instincts were honed by years of battle, was up instantly. She didn't light the lamp right away; her eyes were already adjusted to the dark.
"(Y/N)? What’s wrong?" That sharp edge that usually preceded a blade's strike cut through her voice. She moved close to you, her hands immediately finding your shoulders.
"I think... it’s starting," you gasped, catching your breath as the first wave of pain slowly began to recede, leaving only a tremor throughout your body. "Too early... there’s still a week left..."
"Hush, hush," Kanao took control of herself instantly. Her composure was her greatest weapon. She lit a small oil lamp, and warm light filled the room. "Breathe with me. Deep breath in, smooth exhale. Remember how Shinobu-sama taught us?"
She didn't panic. She acted methodically. Standing up, she threw on her haori and stepped quickly into the hallway. You heard her quiet but confident footsteps. A minute later, she returned—Aoi was running behind her, tying her apron on the go, followed by Shinobu, whose face looked unnaturally serious in the lamplight.
"Well now, little butterfly, have you decided to flutter out ahead of schedule?" Shinobu sat on the edge of your futon, placing a hand on your belly. Her voice was melodic and soft, but you saw her exchange a quick look with Aoi.
The next contraction hit you ten minutes later. It was stronger than the first. The pain climbed up from your lower back, seizing your entire body, stripping away the ability to think. You gripped Kanao’s hand so hard your nails left deep marks in her skin.
Kanao didn't even flinch. She sat behind you, pressing your back against her chest, creating a steady support.
"I’m here," she whispered into your ear, her voice the only anchor in this sea of pain. "I’m not going anywhere. I’ve got you."
Five hours passed. The dawn outside painted the sky in soft pink tones, but you didn't see it. For you, the world had shrunk to the size of this room, to the smell of medicinal herbs and Kanao’s face just inches from your own.
The pain became constant. It no longer came in waves—it lived inside you, pulsing and tearing. You were exhausted. Sweat stung your eyes, hair clung to your face, and your lips were parched from the continuous, heavy breathing.
"I can't anymore..." you groaned as another contraction forced you to arch your back. "Kanao... please... make it stop..."
Kanao felt your body trembling. She saw your suffering, and it was harder for her than any wound. She, who could coolly face Upper Moons, now felt utterly helpless. Her eyes were full of tears she wouldn't allow herself to shed, lest she frighten you even more.
"Look at me," she said firmly, cupping your face in her palms. "(Y/N), look at me!"
You struggled to focus on her violet eyes. A fire of determination burned in them so brightly it made you forget the pain for a split second.
"Flower Breathing," Kanao whispered. "You know its basics. Focus on my rhythm. Your body is a bud that must open. Don’t fight the pain, accept it. It is the force leading the baby to us. Breathe with me."
She began to breathe loudly and steadily, using the technique that allowed Slayers to control blood flow and heart rate. You instinctively began to synchronize with her. Your pulse, previously chaotic from fear, began to level out.
"Good," Shinobu, who had been nearby the whole time, nodded to Aoi. "The time has come. Aoi, prepare the instruments. Kanao, don’t let her go. This will be the hardest stage."
The room became unbearably hot. You felt your consciousness starting to slip. Shinobu and Aoi’s voices sounded as if they were coming from far away, through thick water. The only thing keeping you in reality was Kanao’s hands. She held you close, her whispering never stopping for a second. She told you about how you would walk in the garden when the baby grew up. About how she would teach them to see beauty in every fallen petal. She painted a future for you where this pain didn't exist.
"Come on, (Y/N)!" Shinobu’s voice became commanding. "One more effort! Do it for her! Do it for the baby!"
You screamed. That scream wasn't one of weakness—it was the cry of a warrior entering the final assault. You poured everything into that movement: your love for Kanao, all those days of waiting, all your will to live.
The pain reached its peak, turning into a blinding white flash. It felt as though the world around you had exploded into a thousand shards.
And then... silence.
The silence lasted only a moment, but it felt like an eternity. You slumped helplessly against Kanao’s shoulder, your eyes closed, your heart hammering in your throat. You felt nothing but an absolute, ringing void.
And suddenly, a sound cut through that void.
At first, it was a faint, gasping rasp, and then—a ringing, piercing, incredibly vibrant cry. A child was declaring their right to exist to the world.
You opened your eyes. Your vision was still blurred, but you saw Shinobu and Aoi bustling over something small and pink in warm swaddles. You felt Kanao beside you literally go limp. Her hands, which had held you so tightly, were now trembling.
"You did it..." Kanao whispered, and there was more reverence in her voice than you had ever heard in your life. She was crying. Tears rolled down her cheeks, leaving tracks on her dusty skin, but she didn't notice them. "(Y/N)... look..."
Aoi approached you, her face glowing with happiness despite her fatigue. She carefully held out the bundle.
"It’s a girl," Aoi whispered. "Quite tiny, but so loud! A true butterfly."
Kanao took the child with trembling hands. She held her as if she were the most fragile treasure in the universe. She slowly lowered herself onto the futon beside you, letting you see your daughter’s face.
The little one was beautiful. A tiny nose, tightly clenched fists, and dark, damp hair. She grew quiet as soon as she felt the warmth of her mother's hands.
"She looks like you," you whispered, barely touching the baby’s velvet cheek with your fingertips.
"No," Kanao shook her head. "She has your stubborn chin. And your strength."
At that moment, Shinobu approached and gently placed her hands on each of your shoulders. "You both did an incredible job. Congratulations. The Butterfly Mansion has never seen a dawn like this."
Several hours passed. The room had been tidied. Shinobu and Aoi had left to let you recover. The faint scent of lilac and medicine still lingered in the air, but now it felt like the scent of life and victory.
The baby slept in her cradle, which Aoi had placed very close by. Sunlight now completely filled the room, playing on the walls and the tatami.
Kanao sat beside you, pressing her shoulder to yours. You were exhausted, but the sense of peace enveloping you was indescribable. Your body still ached, but it was a "right" kind of pain—the pain of accomplishment.
"I kept thinking about that coin," Kanao said suddenly, looking at her sleeping daughter.
You raised an eyebrow inquisitively.
"I used to not know what to do if I didn't flip it," she continued, turning to you. "I was afraid to make decisions. Afraid to feel. But today... seeing what you went through... I realized that a coin could never have predicted this. Love isn't a chance. It’s a choice we make every single second."
She took your hand and gently kissed your palm.
"Thank you for her. And thank you for waiting for me back then, in the rain."
You smiled, closing your eyes. Now you knew that the empty room would never be quiet again. The breathing of those you love would always sound within it.
"What shall we name her?" you whispered.
Kanao thought for a moment, looking out the window where a small white butterfly sat on a lilac branch, spreading its wings under the morning sun.
"Shiori," she replied. "The weave that binds us."
You nodded in agreement. The name was perfect.
Outside the Butterfly Mansion, a new day was beginning. To the world, it was just another day in the Slayers' struggle against demons, but for the two of you, it was the first day of a new life. A life where there was no longer room for loneliness, where fear dissolved in the warmth of tiny palms, and the scent of lilac in the room became a symbol of eternally coming home.
Kanao put her arm around your shoulders, and you fell asleep, knowing that your "brave butterfly" truly wasn't going anywhere. She would be here. Every minute. Every breath. Until the very end.
