Yesterday was a difficult day
I had a mental breakdown & a panic attack at work from the stress levels. I talked to my dad after work that day & he has worked in a corporate setting & I wanted to document some advice he gave me. 1. Prioritize your list of things to do, then stop taking calls, going to meetings, working on other projects, etc. until that highest priority item with a very close deadline is done. 2. Skip meetings. Don’t be afraid to. If your manager questions why you weren’t there, ask them if that meeting was more important than meeting a close/important project deadline. 3. Push back. If they ask you to do something ("they" being team members/peers/coworkers, or even managers), don’t be afraid to say no. Tell them you do not have enough time. 4. As much as it sucks & technically you shouldn’t have to, you should come in early, work through lunch, and stay late. The caveat here is that this should be sporadic when you have a close deadline. This is not sustainable, realistic, and completely ruins your work-life balance if you continually work extra. 5. Ask yourself if what you're working on is going to be important/significant in ____ weeks/months/years. You fill in the blank box with some amount of time… If you don’t think something is worth your time, stop working on it or ask someone to explain to you why it is significant you do that task. It’s important not to ask this question in a patronizing way though.
