[Starscream and Complex Trauma] Transformers Prime—if you read the novels, you realize that Starscream, who is just comic relief in the show, is deeply traumatized. He was a military strategist and part of the elite Seeker troop. Megatron destroyed his home nation, Vos, and chose not to kill Starscream solely because he realized Starscream was the one the aerial military force respected, and he needed that aerial strategy against the Autobots; that’s why he made him second-in-command. But in the novels—which are two—Starscream delivers fantastic silver-tongued dialogue, very much against the stupidities Megatron spouts. So, when you get to the animated series and see him as comic relief, you realize he already has [complex trauma]. Even in the operating room, after being treated by Knock Out, Megatron approaches him, and in an area that is supposed to be safe—the medical bay—Starscream backs away on his gurney out of pure fear.
And he had a relationship with Knock Out that could have had so much potential, because he was his confidant. But the problem here is that when you are a person who is constantly abused, verbally and physically, you end up adopting infantile defense mechanisms. And by infantile, I don't mean it in a derogatory way like 'oh, they are childish and ridiculous' ñiñiñiñi; rather, two types of defense mechanisms exist: mature and infantile. Infantile ones are highly effective for immediate survival, but they don't usually help you develop reflective tools for the future.Therefore, being in a constant environment of abuse, Starscream had to start replicating these infantile defense mechanisms, which meant becoming just as aggressive and defensive as his environment, developing paranoia and aggression. You see it multiple times: whenever Knock Out makes a sarcastic comment—because he is canonically gay and has this 'sassy gay' personality; I mean, he literally looks at Optimus Prime and goes: 'Hey, nice wheels, [weets rims] bastard, but my boyfriend Breakdown has cooler ones'—every time Knock Out makes a comment like that, Starscream feels it threatens his superiority as a commander and gets aggressive. And this is despite the fact that he heavily empathizes with Knock Out, because when Breakdown dies and Knock Out is dissecting his corpse, Starscream asks him if it affects him emotionally. In other words, he is empathizing with the fact that Knock Out has to see his partner dead because of Airachnid.
So, Starscream does have emotions, but the condition Megatron subjects him to has him completely conditioned. He always says he is mistreated by Megatron, and nobody believes him, claiming it's a lie and that he is just victimizing himself. But the Autobots haven't seen how... There is a scene where Megatron literally puts his foot on top of Starscream and says he is going to crush him. In TFP, Megatron's redemption is absolute garbage. Only when he dies and his body is possessed by Unicron, and he is physically abused by Unicron—meaning his spark is tortured—does Megatron, after regaining control of his body, go: 'No, I no longer wish to lead the Decepticons, I no longer wish to rule.' And it's like: *dude, you went through less than 5% of the absolute filth you did to Starscream for centuries, and suddenly Unicron electrocutes you a couple of times and you're like 'broh chill, I changed.' bruh. It has been the most absurd redemption I've ever seen for a Megatron. They should have tortured him way more or something. How on earth did he get that sudden lucidity out of nowhere just because he got beaten up a little bit? Optimus has literally punched him in the face more times than what Unicron did in, I don't know, maybe a day or a week (the timeline from when Megatron wakes up at the bottom of the sea and flies toward planet Cybertron). It doesn't make it clear if it's days, weeks, or just one day, because Unicron upgrades Megatron's body so it flies directly over there by itself. But it's a total rip-off. It's the worst redemption I've ever seen for Megatron.

Y con infantiles no me refiero a un término despectivo como "¡ay, es que son de niñitos y son ridículos!" sino que existen dos tipos de mecanismos de defensa, que son los maduros e infantiles. Y los infantiles son muy efectivos, pero no suelen ayudarte a desarrollar herramientas reflexivas a futuro.
Entonces, Starscream, al estar en un ambiente constante de abuso, tuvo que empezar a replicar los mecanismos de defensa infantiles, el cual era el volverse tan agresivo y defensivo como su entorno, y desarrolla paranoia y agresión. Y se ve múltiples veces como cuando, Knock, hace algún comentario sarcástico—porque él es gay canónico y tiene una personalidad como de "gay simpático". O sea, él literalmente ve a Optimus Prime y le dice: "Oye, qué sexy son tus ruedas, cabrón, pero mi novio, que es Breakdown, las tiene más chidas"—cada que Knockout hace un comentario así, Starscream siente que vulnera su superioridad como comandante y se pone agresivo. Y eso que él empatiza mucho con Knockout, porque cuando muere Breakdown y Knockout está diseccionando su cadáver, le pregunta si eso le afecta emocionalmente. O sea, que está empatizando con el hecho de que Knockout tenga que ver a su compañero muerto por Airachnid.
Entonces, Starscream tiene emociones, pero la condición en la que Megatron lo somete, lo tiene condicionado.
El siempre dice que es maltratado por Megatron y nadie le cree y que es mentira y que se victimiza. Pero es que los Autobots no han visto como... Hay una escena en la que Megatron literalmente le pone el pie encima a Starscream y dice que lo va a aplastar.
En tfp la redención de Megatron es basura, porque solamente cuando él muere y su cuerpo es poseído por Unicron, y es abusado físicamente por Unicron —o sea, que lo tortura su spark—, Megatron después, cuando recupera la posesión de su cuerpo, dice: 'No, yo ya no quiero ser líder de los Decepticons, yo ya no quiero dominar'. Y es como: *dude, pasaste menos del 5% de la mugre que le hiciste a Starscream durante siglos y de repente Unicron te electrocuta un par de veces y tú así de 'wey, ya cambié'. *bruh* Ha sido la redención más absurda que he visto en un Megatron. Debieron haberlo torturado más o algo así. ¿cómo rayos le llegó esa lucidez de la nada solo porque le pegaron un poquito? Optimus literalmente le ha dado puñetazos en la cara más veces de lo que le ha hecho Unicron en, no sé, tal vez quizás un día o una semana (la timeline de cuando Megatron despierta en el fondo del mar y se va volando hacia el planeta Cybertron). No te deja claro si son días o semanas o solo un día porque Unicron optimiza el cuerpo de Megatron para que vuele solo directamente hacia allá. Pero es una estafa. Es la peor redención que he visto de Megatron." A bullshit (?
