#knitting headcanons

affogato is very good at knitting! his mother used to teach him how to knit gloves and sweaters all the time. he likes to make things for his s/o whenever he has the time, or if a special occasion is coming up (like their birthday, an anniversary, a holiday, etc). he does struggle now and then, but the final result is worth it in the end.

dark cacao definitely isn’t the best when it comes to knitting, having messed up and pricked his fingers and hands multiple times. instead he prefers watching others knit. he appreciates the skill, and while it’s something he can’t do, he does think of a lot of ideas for what to knit things into and what to create. if his s/o likes to knit, he’d definitely tell them a few of his ideas.

caramel arrow is terrible at knitting, but still tries her hand at it anyways. her aim is to become better at it, so that she has something to do in her very rare spare time. most of her creations are either half-way finished, works in progress, or turn out very poorly. nonetheless, she really likes to do it and wants to practice. and because she wants to make her s/o really cute plushies.

crunchy chip isn’t as good as affogato at knitting, but he is fairly decent. he picked it up when he saw a few kids doing it for some sort of gift program. ever since then, he’s been interested in knitting (and most crafting/artistic skills). he’s made a few toys for his cream wolves and some for the kids around the kingdom. he’d literally melt if s/o were to ask him to make one for them. it’d be the best thing he’s made yet.

But i think they use the continental knitting stitch on The Continent.

Anders, as promised in Awakening, has indeed taken up knitting; one of his patients taught him how in lieu of payment. He’s not very good at it and is always dropping stitches, so his projects are full of holes. He keeps offering to teach Hawke, but Hawke always claims not to have the time (Hawke is actually rather intimidated by how difficult it looks; Bethany tried to teach Hawke once, but Hawke never got the hang of casting on). He mostly makes scarves, but is attempting to make a cat sweater, and is rather disgruntled when Merrill gives him one as a gift. He gives romanced Hawke one of his better scarves, and Hawke wears it until it’s pretty much completely unraveled.

Isabela definitely knits; she and Merrill get together for a stitch-n-bitch all the time. She also may or may not have ever used a knitting needle to kill someone.

Merrill crochets, and makes very bright and tacky lopsided slouchy hats and shapeless baggy sweaters. She gives them to all of her friends and to her neighbors in the alienage who don’t have the heart to refuse her.

Fenris is reluctant to learn at first, but he has to do something shut up in that manor all day, so eventually Sebastian teaches him how. His stitches are very neat and precise, if a bit tight. He’s very self-conscious about his projects, though, and won’t give any to his friends or even show them what he’s working on; however, every winter the Chantry donation box receives an anonymous donation of a very large bundle of hats, all perfectly identical. If anyone notices that they match the one that Sebastian wears, they don’t say anything.

Sebastian knits, very simple, practical things, although when no one is looking, sometimes he’ll be a bit frivolous and add a bit of cabling. 

Aveline does not knit, but at some point when she and Donnic decide to have children, she becomes very determined to learn. She is terrible at it, but after much sweat, tears, and blood (literally in all three cases) she manages to produce a single baby bootie. She gives up when she realizes that she needs to make another one, and their children end up clothed mostly in Donnic’s knitwear (plus a few hats from their aunties Merrill and Isabela).

Varric does not knit, but he proudly wears all the things his knitter friends give him, no matter how ugly. He has a sweater from Merrill that is absolutely hideous, but is warmer than anything else he owns. In fact, all the companions have That One Sweater from Merrill, even though most of them have “lost” it; although a romanced Hawke seems to have a different one for every day of the week.

(Fenris actually wears his around the manor, because it gets cold there, but he would never admit it, and sometimes has to do a quick change if he’s wearing it when the companions show up.)

Bethany is excellent at knitting, and comes up with her own patterns that are all very stylish and fancy; she even sells them for a bit of extra cash when they’re living in Lowtown. Hawke teases her about using magic to cheat.

Carver takes up knitting after Ostagar and Lothering to cope with PTSD and such. He probably learned at Ostagar from the other soldiers, actually. He’s not as good as Bethany, but Hawke and Leandra assure him that they are very proud of him, and the Bethany would be too; in a way, knitting is how he keeps her memory alive. He gives most of his stuff away to the Wardens/Templars, who are very pleased and impressed with his work.

(This post started with a Dorian/Vivienne crochet/knitting rivalry headcanon, and got out of hand from there).

Dorian crochets. Back in Tevinter he had a lady friend who tried to teach him to knit, but he never got the hang of it and has felt bitter toward the craft ever since. On the ship from Tevinter, however, he encountered an elderly woman who taught him to crochet to help keep his mind off his seasickness. Is constantly making little gifts for the other members of the Inquisition, mostly hats and scarves and such. Bickers with Vivienne about whether crochet is better than knitting, but they still get each other yarn for holiday gifts. Dorian likes soft yarns in bright colors.

Vivienne knits. It helps focus the mind and is not unlike spellcasting in many ways. She makes intricate, lacy things using the tiniest needles and the finest thread. She only gives things away to her closest friends, and one considers it a great honor to receive a shawl from Madame de Fer; the Iron Bull has a scarf that he is very careful with. 

At one point Vivienne and Dorian are engaged in a very heated debate that is full of arcane technical language, and the Inquisitor asks Solas “Are they talking about magic again?” to which Solas replies “No. Knitting. Or crochet. I can never remember which is which. They’re basically the same anyway.” At which point both parties turn on him to explain in great detail exactly what the difference is. Solas himself cannot knit; his socks have been darned a million times because he doesn’t know how to make new ones.

Sera’s journal has that note about wanting to learn to knit; it’s “like stabby sewing.” She badgers Vivienne into teaching her, and Vivienne tries, but well, it’s Sera. Soon her loft is littered with half-finished projects and orphan needles missing their partners. And she’s always dropping stitches and accidentally adding them, so her projects are all wobbly and lumpy and full of holes.

Cassandra knits; most of the military folks at least know how to make their own socks. That doesn’t mean she’s any good at it. After one look at her coarse, gray, lumpy socks, Cassandra receives a a bright striped pair from Dorian and a perfectly crafted pair from Vivienne. 

Cullen knits for the same reason, though he’s a bit better at it. He takes up knitting in earnest to cope with the lyrium withdrawal, and soon his room is littered with socks (it’s the only thing he knows how to make). They’re perfectly good socks, but very practical and plain, and Dorian keeps trying to get him to use more colors. Or to learn to make something different, but Dorian can’t knit and Cullen is hopeless at crochet, so there’s only so much he can do.

Leliana has totally crocheted tiny sweaters for her pet nugs. 

The Iron Bull gets yarn bombed by Dorian, and Dorian is utterly taken aback when Bull retaliates in kind a few days later, mostly because “What kind of stitch is that?” And that’s how Bull shows Dorian Qunari crochet (i.e. the Thedas equivalent of Tunisian crochet).

Cole cannot knit, or crochet, or anything. The others try to teach him, but he always tangles the yarn and seems perfectly content to sit around unknotting it. 

Varric’s a city dwarf, and hasn’t ever really been in a situation where couldn’t just buy new socks when he needed to. Hence he does not know how to knit or crochet, which makes him the perfect person for all the others give all their random projects to.

Blackwall crochets, though he’s a little rusty at it. He goes to Dorian for advice for something nice to make for Josephine (or the Inquisitor). He doesn’t say outright of course, but Dorian recognizes the little crocheted flower tucked into Josephine’s clipboard.

Josephine never learned how to knit or crochet herself (she’s a noble lady who was supposed to learn embroidery, though she’s not much good at that either). She is very much in awe of people who can do crafty things like that. Eventually she learns how to crochet (probably from Blackwall or Dorian) and makes little plushie dolls of her friends.
