This little blurb is about Kipsy, the Hudson River Monster. It was published in Opelika, Alabama's The Times on September 8th, 1886.

Kipsy resides in New York’s Hudson River, of course. It gets its name from the town of Poughkeepsie. The majority of witnesses claim to see multiple humps risen out of the water and sometimes a “snake-like head”. Kipsy had been seen for hundreds of years. The biggest guesses as to what the Hudson River Monster could be is either a manatee or sturgeon misidentification. In 2019, a 14 foot long sturgeon was discovered in the river, leading some to think it was the source of many Kipsy sightings.

I really like lake monsters. I just think they're neat!

Books about aquatic monsters were my favorite. Specifically ones about lake monsters. I’ve always wanted to see one, or at least to see something I could convince myself was one. I nearly managed it once, when I was sixteen. I was on one of the old-fashioned steam-powered paddle boats that takes tourists around Lake George, and possessed as I was of a wild theory that it was possible for the fabled ‘Champ’ in Lake Champlain to swim from there to Lake George via underground tributaries (spoilers: it’s not), I spent most of my time on that boat staring very hard at the water.

But I saw nothing, and so resigned myself to a monster-less life.

So you can imagine how pissed I was to discover that while in college, I had lived twenty minutes from the site of several river monster historical sightings and no one told me.

Hello I spent my shift at work compiling a map of known Kipsy (the Hudson River Monster, like the Hudson Valley's own Nessie) sightings going back to 1609 when the crew of Henry Hudson's own ship claimed to see a sea serpent off the coast of northern New Jersey, and attached clippings of the relevant source articles for each one!

Other sightings than these have been reported over the centuries, but these are all those for which I was able to find a location mentioned. Some took some real digging since they haven't been called what they're called in their articles for over 100 years!
