He comes home looking worse than he left. In a flash of light because he wouldnāt dare hunt in Halās universe. He has Hare cleaned, bandaged, blood cleaned off the floor. The house looks no different when he comes back than before he and Hal had left on their task. For a moment, considering it, he had wondered whatĀ āsuccessā really meant. Surely they were successful, but at what cost?
Swallowing, he licks the back of a fang, his eyes, especially the lashes, are still tacky with his own venom. At the very least, the bedraggled child look had made for easy pickings. There was never any worry about what to do with the bodies because what he didnāt take Foo had. He hadnāt even known the familiar knew where he was, but he had shown up as x was leaving. The AI was grateful.
So heās home, or, at Davidās. He doesnāt really want to be here. He likes David, bless his heart. But this is not home. And x desperately wants somewhere that is home. The only thing that keeps him from dragging himself directly into bed, or a shower, is Halās scent. And x may look awful but he doesnāt look awful enough to pass that up.
He looks tired, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts that canāt be seen anyway because the shirt is too long and his eyes look sore and he smells sweet where heās cried fluid that wasnāt tears, iron sharp where thereās blood on his shirt. Heās never killed anyone before. It was surprisingly easy.
Before he finds Hal, he moves to where he has a bag of things, clothing mostly, removing his now ruined one to pull on another, shaking slightly, like a leaf in early November. He checks on Hare and Dirk, sleeping soundly, and then exits the room, praying David isnāt home as he pushes the door to the bedroom open, standing there in the doorway, he wrings his hands in the hem of his shirt, which smells like laundry soap instead of blood, a too-clean contrast to the scent which still lingers on him, flesh and organ tissue, thatāll have to wait for a shower.
āH-hal, are you a-a-a-awake?ā his voice breaks a little, itās rough from crying, and he reaches up to touch his own throat. Why has tonight been so stressful?Ā
His hands wring, worrying the thumb of one hand against the palm of another.
āH-h-ha-are got h-urt.ā he murmurs, unwaiting,Ā āI sh-should h-have, ha-ve just k-killed D-Dirkās s-s-sire wh-when I w-was th-there.ā he doesnāt spite Hal for not allowing him to, he understands, but...
āth-this is is a-all my, f-fault.ā
He knows it isnāt, really, but it feels like it is.
