CJ and King Max hugging 2025

Now THIS lore dumb really intrigued me as a long-time Archie Sonic fan. King Nigel Acorn ain’t just a kindly old ruler; he’s got a serious, deathly-condescending not-to-be-crossed side as he reminisces on the kingdom’s and G.U.N’s tenuous history. It's very, very similar to the pre-reboot with the Mobian and Overlander war, with King Nigel’s late father having similar description to pre-reboot’s King Max. Interesting that G.U.N. is more “reformed“ than it was in the past, and compounding the fact that Eggman and Snively had their start in there before allying and betraying King Nigel.
I mean, I find it interesting. It’s a shame the lore didn’t get a chance to further elaborate on these details!
my hand slipped
Ooh, look at Knothole Village, now located near Emerald Hill Zone and having that familiar checkered soil! It's pretty nice seeing the early Freedom Fighters meshing perfectly with the game events, which I’ll always commend the creative team for attempting. “Classic“ Sally Acorn even still has her SatAM-inspired hairstyle!
And if you’re wondering why King Nigel is looking uninterested and evil, that’s ‘cause the real king is imprisoned in the Special Zone riight now. That’s just Naugus, being creepy.

This issue is just full of really big “Woah“ moments, like a rollercoaster that never lets up. Get a load of Nigel Acorn, literal King, awaiting before the vault calmly drinking tea before revealing his lvl 99 Paladin weapons on the Hooligans. I guess his daughter wasn’t the only one outfitted with energy weapons on the wrists.
He totally wipes the floor with the bad guys, at least until a knock-out blow from Bark ends the battle early. Poor polar bear even looks regretful afterward though thankfully we know the attack wasn’t fatal.
Ohoho, now this is interesting, if not the most memorable part of the entire issue! There’s a couple of pages dedicated to clearing up what Naugus was doing in the post-reboot Mobius, including how exactly he came to occupy Castle Acorn in #225 and why Tails Doll was there, and how he had lost his powers in the first place (though they don’t elaborate on how touching Nicole made him freak out, and to be frank I’m glad that they don’t xD).
Most importantly, the reboot seems to have retroactively made the events of Sonic Advance 3 be the original reason he lost his powers, Dr. Eggman testing out his dreaded Genesis Wave when he split the world into pocket dimensions and whatnot. It fits as a game element and part of the lore, and it’s one of the things I truly commend Flynn for utilizing on this book. It’s not just “Ooh look, a random game reference!“, it’s an event from the game series seamlessly intertwined with the comic’s narrative. I’m very well fed.
We’re finally here...
the main book’s last complete arc.
Its been a long time coming but we’re inching ever closer to this comic’s end. The Panic in the Sky story certainly has a sense of finality to it, and it SHOULD, considering how long the Shattered World arc went on. A lotta plot points and characters come together, the story ramps up in intensity, Dan Schoening’s covers are very up to snuff with the contrasting BGs seperated by Sonic’s whooshing, and...the covers come together to form a panoramic picture! Good shit
What do you guys say we leave this Sonic Unleashed-inspired story behind? Let’s fix the damn planet already!
