Now THIS lore dumb really intrigued me as a long-time Archie Sonic fan. King Nigel Acorn ain’t just a kindly old ruler; he’s got a serious, deathly-condescending not-to-be-crossed side as he reminisces on the kingdom’s and G.U.N’s tenuous history. It's very, very similar to the pre-reboot with the Mobian and Overlander war, with King Nigel’s late father having similar description to pre-reboot’s King Max. Interesting that G.U.N. is more “reformed“ than it was in the past, and compounding the fact that Eggman and Snively had their start in there before allying and betraying King Nigel.

The gang goes to Hidden Palace Zone on Westside Island!! The colouring really does this place justice and I appreciate that it’s discovered deep within Mystic Cave Zone like in the newer Sonic 2 games.

Oh yeah, G.U.N. are helping the world from behind the scenes! Both comics have glossed over Dark Gaia’s influence on the world at large except for the monsters it spawns, but it’s easy to forget that the planet’s inhabitants are affected by negative emotions every nightfall, kept in check only by G.U.N.’s robots. It was stated in a previous issue that this was the case, but it’s neat to see it acknowledged here. Plus it’s nice to see after the revelation from King Nigel about the organization’s spotty past.

OH YEAH, Knuckles and Amy are adorable in this arc! Not just in how they’re drawn and how their personalities are like 90% better than they were in Sonic Lost World released around that time, but also their interactions as friends is pretty wholesome! It’s a pair that you don’t usually see grouped together on their own adventures and they have good stoic + optimistic friend vibes!

Knuckles may not be the smartest but I’d take this relationship over the one they had in Sonic Boom anyday.

The good guys are all like “Okay let’s split up, gang!“ and things go terrible for all of them. Rouge and Amy Rose encounter emerald traps, Omega gets frozen by familiar crystal magicks, and Knuckles and Shadow...encounter another Echidna?! What da fuuuuuck. Yeah, it doesn’t take a genius to know who this beefcake’s real identity is. xD C’mon, Naugus, you couldn’t even change your glove cuffs and shoes?

Oh hey, Knux is saving that critter trapped near the lava that Sonic also rescued in Worlds Unite. I guess the powers that be retconned those events and gave it to Knuckles, but far be it from me to complain ‘cause this is one hell of an opening page! Look at Knux clinging to crumbling rocks while showing off his gliding prowess, look at the ART done by ABT and Matt Herms!

I know we’ve already completed our walk through the Shattered World storyline, but let’s travel back in time a bit to the Knuckles side story that ran alongside it in Sonic Universe. As the last important arc in Archie Sonic (I’m not counting the Chaotix pirates one..), this could add more to the narrative that the mainline issues didn’t focus on while the planet was still in pieces.
