Kaz: Not until gay marriage is legal everywhere.

The whole essence of Kaz is that he embodies survival against the odds, clawing his way through life even though “no Saint ever watched over him” (best line from the show). Other characters, e.g. Nikolai, Matthias, Nina have grand notions, a strong moral compass or are fighting for something bigger than themselves – and would lay down their lives for a better world or an ideal – but Kaz is a cynic and a pragmatist. He is willing to risk his life, for Inej most of all, but he wouldn’t do it as an act of symbolism, nor would his death ever serve as such – he walks into every danger assuming the plan will work and that he will survive. It would be such a soul-crushing betrayal if Kaz didn’t get to experience ultimate revenge on all those who dismissed him as expendable, insignificant – a Bastard of the Barrel. He is no Lantsov eagle or a soaring dragon; he is a resourceful crow, a cockroach that would survive a nuclear apocalypse.

I want him to turn the tables on those smug hypocrites running Ketterdam and take over the Merchant Council brick by brick until he rules the whole of Kerch like a crooked puppet master. I want him to almost die and rise again and again like a stubborn phoenix (in crow feathers) from the ashes. I want Inej to forever and always be able to rely on his having her back.

The ultimate character development for someone like Kaz is to learn how to live a life, to love another human being and express it. It would be nothing but hollow if he were to die a pointless death – serving only as a kick in the guts for those who hope to escape hopeless circumstances – or if he were to betray his own character and find some noble cause to die for, something the Kaz we know and love would sneer at.
