Shiho releases a shuddering breath as Mikaela climbs on top of his lap. Eager blue eyes meet his before lips descend on his mouth. 

This was their most kept secret. Intimate meetings away from the prying eyes of the rest of their team. 

Shiho moans when Mikaela’s teeth find the side of his neck. 

“Don’t bite.” Shiho mumbles as his hands trail down Mikaela’s bare back. 

Mikaela snorts into his shoulder and Shiho knows the blond rolled his eyes. 

“I already ate.” Mikaela says as he leans back some, eyes once again meeting Shiho’s. The smouldering look inside clear blue eyes has Shiho’s stomach rolling in pleasure. His hips buck involuntarily. Desire guiding his movements. 

Mikaela squeaks in surprise. A sound Shiho had never heard before.

"Denerim, the largest city and capital of Ferelden. Long ago, the elves lived as slaves to humans, and though they’ve been free for many generations now, they are far from equals. Here they live in a walled-off community known as the Alienage, working as servants or day laborers when they can. Despite these hardships, Denerim’s elves are a strong people who take pride in their close community. This is the only world Mikaela knows, until now.”

Mikaela awakes with a start, eyes cringing when the cold breeze breaks through his patched up blanket. Soft snores, and occasional sniffles, permeate the dark room as he curls the blanket around his thin shoulders with trembling fingers. He sits up, body stiff from laying on the hard floor more so than the freezing weather. He sees the smaller children huddled together in front of the long-dead fireplace. Mikaela frowns as he watches their little bodies tremble and twitch, tormented even in sleep. He bites his lip, considering things he knew he shouldn't. No one was awake, though. No one would see.

Slowly, he makes his way to the fireplace, stretching his arms outward and opening his hands. He closes his eyes and concentrates on the feeling of warmth. He can’t quite remember when he'd first discovered he was capable of doing things others could not. All he could remember was his mother's tight clasp on his shoulders, her wild eyes for once filled with a shred of maternal affection, of recognition.

“You mustn’t show anyone. Do you understand, Mikaela? No one!” He’d nodded furiously, and watched with a mixture of relief and sorrow as she released him, her eyes clouding over once more.

Mikaela’s eyes snap open when he feels hot flames lick at his fingertips. He allows himself a small smile as the air around him grows warmer. It should be enough to last them for the remainder of the night and ensure that they all survive the cruel, frigid weather. Mikaela settles back down next to the rest of the children, pleased to see that they are slumbering more peacefully than before.

“Elgara vallas, da’len,” He whispers the nearly forgotten words of the lullaby his mother had once sung to him. The elvish words clumsy on his untrained tongue.

“Melava somniar, mala tara aravas…” Mikaela’s voice dies out as sleep tugs at his mind. As he drifts to sleep, the orange flames dance behind his eyes, and a smile once again finds itself on his lips.

…

Mikaela jerks awake when he hears the sharp clanking of metal coming from beyond the thin walls of their shelter. One by one, the children stir, stretching and yawning as the noise grows louder.

“What is that?” Akane, the closest one to him, rises to her feet, swaying as she does. It was obvious her mind is still muddled with sleep, for that sound was an unmistakable one.

Mikaela is at his feet in an instant. He stands in front of the children and urges them to keep quiet. Their faces fill with fear as they realize what is happening beyond their shelter.

“Akane, keep them hidden. Do not let any of them out of your sight.” Mikaela repeats the words their caretaker always used when in this situation. The elderly elf-woman usually directed her instructions to Mikaela, since he was the eldest, while she stood guard outside their humble house. She isn’t here today, and they need to fend for themselves.

Akane quickly gathers the children and leads them to the back of the house, to a small, dark room they only ever used for days such as these.

“Mikaela, you can’t go out there.” Akane urges, her hand a tight grip around his wrist. Her hand is shaking. No, it was his that was shaking.

“It’ll be alright.” Mikaela forces a smile, releasing himself from her grip. “Stay with the others until I return.”

“But—”

“Please!” Mikaela raises his voice without meaning to, shrill and desperate. “Please just do as I say.”

Akane wrings her hands together, face contorting into a look of pain.

“Be safe.” Her voice wavers, but she doesn’t try to stop him as he exits their shelter.

Outside it is chaos. The laugh of the humans mingles with the cries of his people. The harsh clatter of metal makes his ears hurt, almost as much as the screams of fear. He wants to tear his eyes away when a tall, bulky man, a noble from the looks of his flashy clothing, strikes down against a hovel, uncaring of the looks of anguish and despair thrown his way. The human laughs, head thrown back in mirth. His guards mock those closest to the scene, their words laced with slurs Mikaela is already accustomed to hearing.  

Fear grips his stomach as one of the humans catches sight of him. Mikaela tries to keep from squirming, breathing in deep through his nose. The humans have no reason to bother with him, Mikaela reassures himself. They usually leave after they’ve had their fill of destroying houses and tormenting helpless villagers. Their caretaker would usually get a few nasty words thrown at her as she stood guard outside their home, where she would calmly tell the humans her home only held orphaned children, nothing of value to them. They would ignore her after that, going on their drunken, merry way.

“Well, well, look what we have here, boys.” The nobleman says loudly as he and his group approach. Mikaela wills his legs to seize their trembling, but they refuse to obey.

“A lost little elfling.” The nobleman chortles, the stench of ale reaching Mikaela’s nose. He recoils, pressing himself as close to the wooden door behind him as he can.

“Th-there are only children here.” Mikaela uses the same words their caretaker uses, expecting the men to move along.

The nobleman looks back at his companions, sharing a round of laughter before he turns his cold eyes to Mikaela.

“Ah, yes, the orphans.” He says in derision. “It seems to me there are enough of you filthy knife-ears to last us a lifetime.” The eeriness of his tone has Mikaela digging his nails into his palms, hard enough to draw blood.

Surely, they wouldn’t—

“They are just children, you monsters!” A shrill cry has one of the guardsmen turning, unsheathing his sword.

More cries ring out as the guardsman strikes down the one who’d spoken out. Mikaela can’t stop the gasp of horror as blood pools underneath the fallen body.

They are going to kill him. They are going to kill him, and then they are going to kill all of the children inside.      

Mikaela shuts his eyes, ignoring the shouts of the men before him. He concentrates on the fire burning deep in his belly, urging it to grow, to consume, to destroy.

Just as a sharp blade rises against him, fire erupts from his hands, covering every inch of the men. Screams of agony bleed through the air, drowning out the pounding in Mikaela’s head. He watches as the humans scatter, crashing into each other as the flames eat at their flesh. The fire isn’t powerful enough to kill any of them, but it is enough to drive them out.

Silence falls as all eyes fall on Mikaela.

Mikaela stares down at his hands, still reeling from the shock. He vaguely hears the door behind him open as arms wrap around his body.

“You saved us.” Akane whispers against his back, her hold tightening as she begins to cry.

Mikaela cradles his hands as he sees the corpse of the elf being carried away, hushed whispers springing to life around him.

“A mage! Here! Maker help us all.”

“Those bastards will be back. They’ll want more blood after this.”

“Surely, the Elder knew he was a mage! Why would they keep...”

“They’ll be back! We need to—”

Their words fade as Akane leads him inside, shutting the door behind her. Mikaela is instantly surrounded by the rest of the children. They hadn’t seen anything.

“Why are you crying?” One of the smallest asks, her eyes turning from Akane to him. Mikaela quickly wipes away the tears he hadn’t realized he was shedding, a small smile curling his lips.

Of course.

They were too understanding, too caring, too good.

Pain lingered in some of their eyes, but they were quick to move on to the positive, the silver lining. He's alive. We didn't lose him. Thank you for saving him.

Saving him.

Mikaela didn't have the energy to fight them on it, had no right to be angry about their comforting smiles, their soft words. He felt himself nod, throat tight.  

…

It took longer to travel back to where he had hidden Kimizuki. He couldn't run. The group only stopped to rest once, which showed how anxious they were to see their friend. Mikaela knew how tired they must all be after their battle. A battle that ended only after Yuu lost control, again.

“Really, Mika, I’m fine.” Yuu said as he stood from beneath the shade of a large tree. Yuu gave him a blinding smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

Mikaela wanted to press the issue, certain that Yuu was hiding something from him, but at that moment they began to move forward.

When they were close enough that Mikaela could pick out Kimizuki’s scent he stopped the group.

I think it’s best if I go first, to make sure he’s still ok.” The last thing Mikaela wanted was for Kimizuki to attack one of his friends. The group had lost most of their supplies in their last battle and would need to scavenge for more before they could begin their donations to Kimizuki. The boy had a strong will, but instinct would eventually take over.

Mikaela knew that all too well.

“Of course.” Shinoa was the first to speak, giving him a small smile. The entire group looked  equal parts eager and nervous.

Mikaela nodded before taking off.

He found Kimizuki much as he’d left him. Slumped against the wall, face set on a grimace. The boy turned to look at him, eyes blazing. Kimizuki threw a hand over his nose, tears springing from his eyes.

“I can smell them...I-I can’t do this.” Kimizuki ground out from behind his hand.

Mikaela watched him closely, looking for any signs that he would rush past him in order to get to one of the humans just outside. There was nothing. The boy remained rooted to his spot, stiff and hard as stone.

“Hey.” Mikaela said as he moved to crouch in front of Kimizuki. “You just haven’t had enough blood.” Mikaela unbuttoned his collar, pulling the fabric down.

“It’ll help a second time.” Just as he said those last words, Kimizuki plunged forward, fangs penetrating his neck.

Mikaela breathed in slowly, not yet used to the feeling. It was too raw, too intimate, made him feel vulnerable.

Kimizuki finished, but didn’t move away. He pressed his head against Mikaela’s shoulder, silence dragging for a few seconds before he finally spoke.

“Thank you.”

Mikaela didn’t know what to say. You’re welcome felt unbefitting to the situation. He didn’t feel he deserved his gratitude. His throat felt too tight again, and all he wanted was to close his eyes and wake up to when he was eight years old.

Mikaela closed his eyes and when he opened them, Kimizuki was standing in front of him. His face was turned away, but his hand was stretched down to Mikaela.

Mikaela stared at it. His first impulse was to ignore it and get up on his own, but he...he realized he had no need to act the petty child.

He reached for Kimizuki’s hand, grasped it tight as he was pulled up.
