I'm actually surprised by how relevant Virginia Woolf's works still are today.
Take the Angel in the House, for example—that phantom or alter ego of a woman that whispers in her ear about how she must be gentle with men, how she must lie to them, how no one should suspect she has her own opinions, anything beyond purity and beauty.
Of course, our modern Angels have become a bit less direct. Our Angels are afraid of being seen, afraid of conflict. Our Angels advocate for feminism to be "equality of the sexes" and say things like "boys cry too," because we must be understanding of everyone, right? The Angel will fear revealing herself; she’ll put on makeup and smile sweetly after all, it’s her choice, It's her pleasure to be beautiful in each other's eyes.
And you won’t even notice as there’s less of you and more of the Angel.
