Every Record I Own - Day 683: Khlyst Chaos Is My Name
Khlyst was a one-off project featuring the Khanate rhythm section---bassist James Plotkin and drummer Tim Wyskida---and Thorr’s Hammer vocalist Runhild Gammelsæter. Recorded over the course of 2004 and 2005 and officially released at the tail end of 2006, it seems to have served as a creative distraction during the final months of Khanate’s existence. And in many ways, it scratches a similar itch. Chaos Is My Name taps into some truly ugly and discordant sounds. The music is similarly broken and spontaneous, though it almost sounds more like Lightning Bolt trying to diagnose malfunctioning equipment as opposed to Khanate’s dissonant doom. Gammelsæter keeps things rooted in the metal world with vocals that sounds even more ghoulish and goblin-like than Khanate’s Alan Dubin. The songs on Chaos Is My Name alternate between these grotesque blunt-force improvisations and moody droning instrumental pieces, effectively creating a jarring juxtaposition between an almost absurdist malignant racket and bone-chilling tension.
Honestly, this is one of my favorite albums in the Hydra Head catalog. It’s great for freaking out your neighbors or irritating your bandmates when they’re “too tired” for their driving shift and you have to take over the wheel.
