Some random doodle of Kattly.
This is what Kattly sounds like after she becomes KettleBlack.
Thank you, @fattyatomicmutant for lending your voice and time!
floating in the glow… is this the future or just a really weird bath? 🌌✨ #cyberbath #glowingpod #sci-fiwaifu #techdream #neonvibes
3 and 7 for kattly, 9 and 17 for pontius and 6 and 10 for scram!!!
Kattly Black (KettleBlack)
3. What was the first thing you decided on, the character's name, appearance, personality or their role in the story?
Her patient name, KettleBlack, was the first aspect of her to come to me. From there, I figured out her patient appearance and role. I wanted to have this imposing, dangerous and mysterious figure who had sway in REM but in a manner that one wouldn't expect. Figuring out her human appearance was the final and hardest part of creating her.
7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?
I'm a sucker for duality in character design so the two halves in her human body is probably my favorite aspect.
As a patient, I love the way her visor makes one think there's possibly a face beneath or inside her. Then when she opens it, there's nothing but flames.
Pontius Collin (PotsCalling)
9. How big is their role in the story? Do they make a frequent appearance or are they a character with little "screentime" but big influence? Or are they just a favourite background guy?
It really depends on which characters are being talked about at the time. For some patients, he's The Big Bad Warden and the one they're fighting against. In Kattly's story, he's her foil and despised "rival". His slicing, frigid water against her roaring, protective fire. In other patients like Charis and Rotary's stories, he's just a name heard in passing.
17. Are there any motifs or symbols associated with the character? How are they represented, in their design, personality or in some other way?
Unnerving eyes with abnormally sized pupils is a recurring theme around him, representing his desire to seem like this omniscient presence. Always watching, ready to hunt you down, inhuman. This motif is reflected in his appearance as both a human and a patient though it's more prominent when he's a patient given the enormous eyespots on either side of his head with not many other features. Another thing for him is the gurgling of water through pipes, the convergence of air and water to make an unusual, foreboding noise.
Scram
6.What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do?
I created him with the express desire to have a "failed" patient that grows control rods from their body. I also wanted him to have a cartoonish, highly expressive face so he could provide a strange spot of comedy in contrast to the bleakness of REM. The rest of his appearance is based off my hazmat species which, in turn, is based off real hazmat suits.
10.What is their main character arc in the story? Where do they start and how do they develop? Do they get a happy ending or is their story a tragic one?
He doesn't really have much of a character arc that I have planned. I have a feeling he's going to develop himself as time wears on. As for how his story ends, it'll most likely be bittersweet. Like many of the patients in the Basement, he's relatively content living down there in relative obscurity. Escape from the facility? Not on his mind. Relaying information between sectors is more important to him. Perhaps it ends with him doing what he enjoys?
Thank you for asking these!! I really gotta digitize Pontius' design. Unfortunately, stupid Tumblr won't let me access the folders that has Scram and Kattly's pictures...

The #KettleBlack’s elegant (if clattery) & award-winning interiors by Studio You Me (2015), partly in a part-retained Victorian terrace now dominated by Elenberg Fraser’s rather audacious residential Fifty Albert (2013, inspired by Japan apparently). Delicious brunch with this fun bunch of delightful chaps. This time trying out #KettleBlack which had variable service but delicious food. (at The Kettle Black) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXhIbBLhEl0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Unexpected afternoon tea opportunity (Hilby’s last work ending at 2pm) allowed us to test out #Liminal (by the people who gave us #TopPaddock, #HigherGround, #ThreeBagsFull & #KettleBlack, which they’ve recently sold). Very nice indeed. Also gave us the opportunity to check out the 2018 interiors to the 1928 #TandGBuilding #161Collins, remodelled by #BatesSmart over #Metier3’s frosty 1991 interventions.
