As someone who is old like Obi-Wan, I wanted to expound a bit of wisdom. Bear with me. (Listen to your elders.)☺️ While cleaning out our garage, I stumbled across a box of papers I’d saved since childhood. In there you as a novel is written in junior high school. I loved science fiction, even back then, and was very proud of my finished work. I gathered up my courage and asked my English teacher to read it when I was fifteen. And, his reaction basically destroyed me. He returned the manuscript after a day and said: “I don’t get it.” I’d written, edited and rewritten a story inspired by Star Trek, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Wars. The main character was simply called Pilot. (A character in search of identity, like “Mando,” who would come 35 years later.) I was so embarrassed and humiliated by his reaction that I quickly grabbed my manuscript back, shoved in by backpack, and never worked on it again. Thank goodness for fanfiction or I’m not sure I ever would have started writing again. Fast forward to age 53 and I found that manuscript at the bottom of a box of childhood memorabilia. As I thumbed through it, I was struck with a realization only time and maturity could bring. There was nothing wrong with my manuscript. For age 15, it was VERY good. If I’d continued to work on my writing, I could have made a career out of it. I was easily discouraged back then. Emotionally vulnerable. Easily swayed by the opinions of others. But, don’t let the doubters and haters discourage you from your dreams. I’ve seen so much talent here on Tumblr in both writing and art skills. If you love something, go for it. If someone doesn’t understand your art, find someone who does. I think you’re all amazing.
(A very short excerpt from my earliest attempt at writing sci-fi. Apparently, I liked h/c fics even back then. I had a “Colecovision ADAM” computer with a Daisy chain printer, noisiest thing ever, but a big step up from the electric typewriter I had before. I saved my data used a cassette recorder, (the 80s version of a “magnetic storage device”) before there were hard drives and write programs in BASIC. My parents knew nothing about computers, and I REALLY wanted one for my writing, so I turned babysitting into a total side hustle. I saved $900 and purchased a computer, printer and noise dampener. (Yes, these early printers were THAT loud.)
