Most people only knew Kat Evans as New York City’s sweetheart. And while Kat was much more than that, she let people think that was all she was, because it kept everything else about her hidden. See, Kat’s innocent appearance was all most people saw. But add a leather jacket and a bobby pin and suddenly she became one of the best petty criminals the city had ever seen. She stole what she wanted from who she wanted, and she got away with it. Until she stole something a little bit more valuable, and suffered the consequences. 

But just as she’s about to die, her knight in shining Spandex, Spider-Man, swoops in and saves the day. And ever since that day, Kat is determined to find out who Spider-Man really is. 

Unfortunately, her so-called quest for his identity leads her right into the messy world of heroes and villains. With a psychopath wearing wings terrorizing her city, Kat finds that maybe the place she’s tried to escape from for her entire life might need her help.

I wrote about the highs and lows of the romance novel genre for Weird Sister a few months ago. Highly recommended: Violette Leduc’s Therese and Isabelle, Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter, Kat Evans’ The Space Between Our Hearts, and Melody Grace’s Unbroken. I’m really interested in how some romantic novels become “high art” (i.e. Therese and Isabelle) whereas we literary types can be pretty snobby about romance novels (especially self-published ones). I’m working on eradicating my inherited/learned snobbery toward this divide, especially as I learn about women who have been super successful with their self-publishing careers.
