Thoughts: Can SuperCorp "Pull a Korrasami?"
People have been talking about Supergirl “pulling a #Korrasami” by having Kara and Lena get together, and I’m 100% on board for #SuperCorp to become canon because I love them endlessly, but the term “pulling a Korrasami” got me thinking.
SuperCorp does resemble Korrasami’s relationship a lot in Kara and Lena’s characterization (hell, I made my own comparison post way back when SuperCorp was still new). Both couples have got the whole “actual puppy meets powerful CEO” thing down pretty well. However, out of curiosity, I was just curious as to whether SuperCorp could actually “pull a Korrasami”
(So I’m not talking about the legitimacy of SuperCorp potentially becoming canon, but whether SuperCorp could use the method Korrasami used to become canon)
I was around when Korrasami first became canon towards the end of 2014, and since then, I’d been under the impression that “pulling a Korrasami” meant that the main characters defy the typical love triangle– instead of the main female character ending up with her original male love interest, she ends up with the original female rival of said love interest.
In the case of Korrasami, Korra and Asami got together after both girls had their turns dating Mako, and then decided that they fit better together than they ever did with Mako– therefore defying the typical love triangle. In other words, “My manic pixie dream girl & my strong female character girlfriend ran off together instead of dedicating their life to improving mine. Rude.”
With SuperCorp, Kara and Lena aren’t in a love triangle with a common male love interest. There’s no common love triangle to defy. Sure, they have the “good meets evil” dynamic in the Supers vs. Luthors aspect, but that’s not a quality that Korrasami possessed (Korra and Asami were on the same “good” side the whole time, regardless of what pre-release plans were there for Asami beforehand). So yes, SuperCorp and Korrasami’s characters bear striking parallels to each other characterization-wise, but could SuperCorp “pull a Korrasami”? Technically speaking, I don’t think so (again, not talking about SuperCorp’s ability to be canon, but the method by which SuperCorp could become canon).
With that being said, if Supergirl were to “pull a Korrasami” between any two characters on the show, it would have been between Kara and Lucy Lane. Lucy had dated James back in season 1, and if the writers had actually decided to keep James as a love interest, Kara would have had her turn to date James too. Kara had been jealous of Lucy in season 1, but like Korrasami, Lucy and Kara became incredibly good friends after realizing how well they worked together. I remember other people realized this back when season 1 was airing, and while I myself haven’t dug into characterization parallels, there are probably Karlucy-Korrasami parallel posts floating around in the #Karlucy tag too.
So yeah, those are my random thoughts on a rather pointless topic lol, but it intrigued me to the point of typing an analysis in an essay fashion without being forced to, so I might as well share! Again, I’m 100% on the SuperCorp train, and have been since it people were still debating between Karlena and SuperCorp lol Does anyone else have any thoughts?
