Being palewise with Kanaya isn’t how you thought it would be. She sees right through you. You blame too much time with Rose, the only other person who dares to ever see through your ironic obfuscation (at least, Rose is the only one rude enough to make a point of it). You weren’t intending on spilling your guts to her, because you thought it was supposed to go the other way—that you were supposed to listen to her while she upended the surprising amount of venom in her big green heart. Yet here you are, bare-eyed, your head nestled in her chest, talking in a high, fast voice about your Bro.

How you’d laughed when Karkat told you about pale makeouts. Yeah, whatever, man, you’d jeered, weird interspecies makeouts that don’t actually include makeouts. Right.

No, this is hot and heavy as you’ve ever had (ha ha. Ha. Ha ha ha.) but, like…emotional. It’s messing you up. But it just feels so good.

"Oh, Dave," Kanaya says when you reach a stopping point to mop up your face, "I’m so sorry. I wish I could have been there to help."

"Yeah. Well." You sniff. "You’re here now. So. That’s cool. I guess."

She gives a little chirruping hum and it vibrates through your skull all pleasant-like.

"Hey, Kanaya?"

"Hmm?"

"Can…can you not tell anybody? ‘bout this? I’ve got a reputation," you say, and Kanaya strokes your hair and does that mysterious lesbian smile you’ve seen many times on Rose’s face. Unlike Rose, it soothes you.

"Of course, Dave," she says, and her voice is so sincere your eyes prickle up again. Gotta stop with these emotions, it can’t be healthy.
