Notes from "What is the Dragon in Japan?" By Spiritual Japan Journal
"In Japan, dragons have often been connected with water. Rain, clouds, rivers, ponds, lakes, and the sea. Water is necessary for human life, yet at times it cannot be stopped by human power. Japanese people have projected both sides of water’s power onto the form of the dragon."
"...A long body like a snake, horns like a deer, sharp fangs and claws. Moving through the clouds, bringing rain, and stirring water, the dragon appears in paintings, shrines and temples, and stories."
X
"...In Buddhism, it became a protector of the Buddhist teachings. At shrines, it may be enshrined as a water deity, a guardian of a lake, or a dragon deity protecting the land. In stories, it is connected with Ryūgū(龍宮), the Dragon Palace beneath the sea, and with places different from the human world."
"Kifune Shrine(貴船神社)in Kyoto is also an important place when considering water and dragons...It is regarded as the head shrine of water deities, with about 2,000 related shrines across Japan. Its enshrined deity is Takaokami no Kami(高龗神). The character okami(龗)is an old written form connected with deities who govern dragons and water...Takaokami no Kami appears in the Kojiki(古事記)and the Nihon Shoki(日本書紀). The deity is described as being born in the mythology surrounding the fire deity and is regarded as a god who governs the supply of water. At Kifune Shrine, prayers have long been offered for rain, for rain to stop, for abundance, and for the peace and well-being of people."
"At Kuzuryū Shrine(九頭龍神社)in Hakone, there is a faith connected with Kuzuryū Ōkami(九頭龍大神)of Lake Ashi(芦ノ湖). According to the origin story of Hakone Shrine, in the Nara period, Mangan Shōnin(万巻上人)subdued a nine-headed poisonous dragon that had been harming the local people and enshrined it as the guardian deity of Lake Ashi.
In this story, the dragon appears as a being feared by people. Through prayer, that dragon is pacified and becomes the guardian deity of the lake. Here we can see an important form of dragon-deity faith in Japan.
Rather than erasing a violent being, people pacify it, enshrine it, and receive it as a guardian deity of the land. This way of thinking is not limited to dragons. It also connects with Japanese kami and beliefs concerning vengeful spirits. A power that harms people can, when properly enshrined, become a protective power."
Tenjin

Story
"Yagami-hime refused the Yasokami’s proposal of marriage and said she would marry Ōnamuchi. The Yasogami were not happy that she would not be theirs, so they came up with a plan to kill Ōnamuchi.
They took him out, lying that they were going to hunt a red boar, and when he went that way, they rolled a large red-hot rock at Ōnamuchi, pinned him down, and killed him."
I do want to emphasize that I’m sharing these because I find them interesting. Shinto has their own practices regarding divination and fortune telling, and Tarot and Oracle are western practices that recently came over to Japan. Please do not think that because I am sharing these that I’m saying Tarot and Oracle Cards are a Shinto practice. I’ll be sharing cards from every Tuesday and Thursday. If you don’t wish to see them block the tag Tarot Days! I won’t be posting these with the Shinto tag since they’re not explicitly Shinto in nature.

I tried to draw these as fast as I could for the event! (Don’t mind the colours there a bit off)
